I applied through company website and got contacted by phone the next day by HR to schedule Skype interview with hiring manager. On the Skype interview he asked me about my background and projects, after which I got an email with request to send them example code and got invitation to Berlin.
In the Berlin interview, hiring manager had no questions for me and left all the time for me asking questions to him. Occasionally he would also check emails on his phone.
Then I met with HR who posed standard situational questions on problem solving and team work.
Finally, I met product analytics VP. It was very difficult to discern when he is making a statement and when asking a question. He posed me some simple linear equation problem, "to see how I think". Hey, I was solving stochastic differential equations before..I also challenged his view that data driven decision making can be Zalando's competitive advantage. Simply, Amazon and other player have been doing that already.
Few days after the interview I got a call from HR who told me that they decided not to make me an offer because they think I wouldn't be cultural fit and would dislike people hanging on Facebook while working and coming in t-shirts. I guess they are right, just they could save me some time and filter for cultural fit before my travel to Berlin.
