I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Zype
Interview
WORST interview process of my life. this process took a month which is beyond ridiculous. i meet the two cofounders, they both love me, i do a stupid take-home assignment and they loved it. then out of nowhere, they add an extra person in the interview process (WHO WAS NEVER MENTIONED) and has nothing to do with the role i'm interviewing for, and she doesn't even work for zype she works for backlight so she has no idea why she's even talking to me. i had the buy in from both cofounders and for zero reason, they were looking for ways to actively sabotage me throughout the process. i already met the cofounders, i did their stupid take-home assignment, and yet it still wasn't enough that they had to throw someone who had 0 relevance to the role in the interview process. that person seemed really bored talking to me and seemed beyond unpleasant to work with anyway. what a ridiculous interview process, this company is gonna have an awful time retaining talent. oh, and there's a major lack of diversity in this company. everyone who works at zype (except for one employee) IS A MALE. they don't value diversity AT ALL.
I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Zype in Mar 2021
Interview
They have no respect for the candidates time. I ADVICE YOU TO STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY.
First, you have an interview with HR, then with a software dev, where you have to do a very short/simple algo exercise. So far so good.
The problem is afterwards, they expect you to complete a code assessment which takes AT LEAST 12-14 hours to complete (with no payment whatsoever). Companies normally requires between 2-4 hours based on my experience, and those that require more pay for your time.
In this case, they don't mention how long the assessment is upfront.
The code assessment is basically building a simple webapp from scratch that uses their API:
- Build authentication from scratch with their API
- Render a list of videos (with pagination)
- Add authorization (again, with their api) to require signing in if the video is premium
- Check on subscriptions depending on video type (some free, some private, and some with premium subscription required)
- Handle errors with API properly.
- Add a good description of the architecture of the app and its integration with their API, ideally with some Diagrams.
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We truly apologize for how this experience was for you, we are always looking to improve our interviewing process and candidate experience.
We use the Take home Assignment tool to make a better assessment of the candidate's level of knowledge for the role he/she is applying to, it's usually based on activities and programs that we have already working.
We continuously encourage all candidates to follow up with us directly for feedback if they don't feel they received it timely or fairly. Please feel free to reach out to me or to the person who was guiding you through the interview process.
Thank you for your feedback!
