One of nine companies formed when Gas del Estado was privatized in 1992, MetroGAS was granted a 35-year exclusive distribution license in its service area, which consists of Buenos Aires and 11 southern suburbs. The utility also sells gas to power plant operators and commercial and industrial customers. Consorcio Gas Argentino Sociedad Anónima holds 70% of MetroGAS. That company is 55%-owned by a subsidiary of UK gas giant BG Group and 45%-owned by a unit of Spanish/Argentine oil player Repsol YPF.
