  1. Program Manager Interview

    Anonymous Employee in United States
    Declined Offer
    Neutral Experience
    Average Interview

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Redfin (United States) in Jun 2021

The interview process was fairly straightforward and quick.

    1. Recruiter Screening (30 min)
    2. Hiring Manager Interview (30 min)
    3. Recruiter Prep (30-45 min)
    4. Loop Interview (4 hours)

Questions generally revolved around my current experience, what I can bring to the table, how I deal with difficult partners/team members, etc.

I learned a bit about the role through each person, however I felt there were some yellow flags that ultimately led to my decision to decline the offer.

First, the job description seemed to ask for a more junior person. I interviewed because I was interested in seeing if they would make it a senior role. I learned that although it would not offer a senior title, they are indeed looking for a senior person. I continued my interview based on this.

Through the interviews, I had learned that there would be little management support for someone in the role and they were expecting a lot of results in very little time (under 2 months). I had also discovered there were no real existing programs in place, so it would be up to this person taking the role to quickly jump into the ocean and start swimming. It wouldn't be bad if they were able to offer a senior title and some management support to help level set expectations.

Lastly, what soured the experience for me a bit was the changing compensation package. The salary and RSUs changed THREE times (verbal, verbal, and official offer), mainly adjusting the RSU package from "high", "low", to "higher" before I negotiated. Although it was a great compensation package, I was not comfortable with most of my compensation and performance bonuses based on RSU that were locked into 4 years.

Additionally, no 401K matching, no Orca bus card (they do have some reimbursement), low PTO accrual, and long work hours w/ little support were a contributing factor to my decline in the offer.

How do you deal with a difficult team member?
