Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) does what its name suggests -- manufactures semiconductors for an international roster of clients. SMIC provides contract manufacturing, or foundry, services to semiconductor companies -- customers supply the designs, and SMIC takes care of production. SMIC operates seven foundries in China and has another under construction. It also manages two other foundries ultimately owned by the municipal Chinese government. SMIC's monthly production capacity is at 162,000 (almost 2 million), but the company lags behind Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) and United Microelectronics (UMC). SMIC gets about 60% of its sales from customers in the US.
