As an employee who recently experienced being terminated without warning due to providing feedback, I am writing to express my disappointment and frustration with how the situation was handled by the manager. I was a new employee in this company for 2 months and noted there were so many red flags.
1. Working in an unhealthy work-life balance workplace can be a frustrating and exhausting experience. Unfortunately, I have had the displeasure of working in such an environment, and I can say that it is one of the worst places to work. I can not speak for all departments in the company but only for the one I have been hired for: The Activation and Omnichannel team, they valued productivity over everything else. They believed that the only way to achieve success was to work long hours, including weekends and holidays to reach the " KPI of the year". Employees were expected to be available at all times and respond to emails promptly, regardless of the time of day or night. (Not only the employee but even the manager who works every day until 9-10 PM, also worked while were on vacation, which shocked me. The employee often gets sick. On my very first days, I followed the team to have lunch and it was shocking to see how fast they tried to finish their lunch so that they can catch the next meeting). And the funny fact is that this way of working did not bring them productivity, I noticed all the projects were constantly delayed and could not meet the desired goal, lack of planning and only focus on execution with unrealistic expectations is their biggest mistake. I refused to work for this culture of always being "on," which led to burnout, stress, and an overall decrease in job satisfaction. So I gave feedback and expressed my concern about this unhealthy work-life balance to my own manager. It did not go well.
2. The company's management also showed little concern for their employees' well-being. There was no support for mental health or stress management. One of my colleagues who has been working there a few months before I reached out to her manager about her not feeling appreciated in the team but the only response she got was "You better find a new job somewhere else". One month later, that person got fired without explanation.
3. I worked with a bad manager who did not plan any onboarding for me. It was a frustrating and challenging situation for me as a new employee. Unfortunately, I have experienced this situation firsthand, and I can say that it is one of the worst professional experiences I have ever had. They gave me a brief introduction to the company and then left me to figure out everything else on my own. I had no idea what was expected of me or how to complete the tasks that were assigned to me. The lack of guidance and support made it difficult for me to get up to speed and contribute to the team. I was constantly being pushed and given a huge amount of tasks every day and all of them are marked as "urgent and high priority", while I did not get any background information about them. It wasted me so much time to figure them out myself while constantly in a stressful mode. I could barely get a hold of my manager and the information has never been documented anywhere. --> I gave feedback and again, this did not go well. My manager took it personally.
4. Feedback and ideas were being disregarded. Since I was a new employee, I have the advantage of seeing what are not working and therefore, I provided feedback and ideas on how to improve the process. I was not sure if the manager took things personally or if they felt intimidated by a new employee who has the courage to speak up. But things went downhill for me after 2 months. My manager ignored me, pushed me out of most of the meetings, and made me feel isolated. I felt extremely bad and blamed myself for being the black sheep. As a result of all of this, my manager decided to call me on my sick day and terminated me without any warning. This action was not only unfair but also unprofessional and disrespectful. It was a clear indication of the lack of communication and professionalism on their part.
