Terrible work environment

Pros

Located in a beautiful building in Tin Town

Cons

- The owner is new to the business new world and has no idea how to manage staff, lead a team, manage client expectations, and is unwilling to hear feedback from anyone as she has herself convinced she has all the answers - The owner creates a negative work environment by consistently gossiping and fabricating stories about other employees to make the narrative work for her - Owner consistently over promises to clients due to her inexperience managing these types of projects. This creates unnecessary pressure on employees when all that would need to happen to correct this issue is a quick conversation with the team on how long a project would take prior to bidding on it - We were expected to supply our own work equipment including computers, cell phones, cameras, etc. In a legitimate business, these are essential tools and should be provided to an employee - Overall a very negative and hostile work environment

As this is getting out of hand and clearly intentional, I will reply to your review directly as it was given. 1. The owner is new to the business new world and has no idea how to manage staff, lead a team, manage client expectations, and is unwilling to hear feedback from anyone as she has herself convinced she has all the answers OUR RESPONSE: It is unfortunate you feel so negatively against me when I had given you many chances to speak to me about how you might have felt about your position. Team meetings were held weekly, one-on-ones regularly and even when an uncomfortable occurrence happened with a past employee, I acknowledged your concerns, immediately met with both you and the other employees and implemented changes. We worked closely together on projects where I provided guidance about expectations as well as the client. Was it ever stated that I have all the answers? This and other comments in this thread can be traced back to one occurrence when myself and management staff sat down with the team to discuss the importance of deadlines, process, conduct and open and honest communications. 2. The owner creates a negative work environment by consistently gossiping and fabricating stories about other employees to make the narrative work for her - Owner consistently over promises to clients due to her inexperience managing these types of projects. OUR RESPONSE: I am not sure what is trying to be articulated here, but I will say that not only myself but my management team checked in regularly with staff and often supported on projects delegated to individual team members. You were not privy to any information/conversations about clients or staff so I am confused about the comments being made here. You were only delegated a few projects and minimal deadlines were given to you during your short time with us. The inexperience you are referring to is simply not true. 3. This creates unnecessary pressure on employees when all that would need to happen to correct this issue is a quick conversation with the team on how long a project would take prior to bidding on it - We were expected to supply our own work equipment including computers, cell phones, cameras, etc. In a legitimate business, these are essential tools and should be provided to an employee - Overall a very negative and hostile work environment OUR RESPONSE: The industry in work is often reactive in nature. This is common in an agency environment. I understand your frustration when the work went in another direction halfway through the project or when it was changed altogether. I acknowledge that it can be stressful and challenging. We don't bid on work, but rather work with clients who have immediate and high-priority deliverables on a long term basis. Your term with us happened to be during the busiest time of the year and I can understand that onboarding and meeting end of fiscal deadlines can be too much for some. We are very clear when hiring that the agency environment and the type of client work we do is not for everyone. You were never expected to provide your own equipment. It is unfair and untrue that you are claiming this. Those who did use their own laptops (like yourself) and camera chose to do so. A phone credit has always been given for those who use their phone for work. Regular check-ins are often done to ask if equipment and software is needed. You had personally declined both. 4. Unfortunately giving advice to someone who has proven time and time again that they're unwilling to grow and learn from their mistakes is a waste of time. The owner repeatedly belittled and dismissed concerns of employees to the point where 4 of the 6 employees who work in there left within a few weeks of one another OUR RESPONSE: It is unfortunate how out of context this statement is. The anger of your experience with us would have been appreciated in an honest, direct and open way. Prior to your last day, little feedback was given about our process and expectations. You were with us on a part-time basis for only a few of months however I currently have staff that have been with me for much longer who are happy and thriving. It has been over 5 months since your last day with us. It is appreciated that further false and angry claims end here. Respect was always given to you while working with us and although it does not seem it will be returned to me, it is asked that at the very least it be given to our current team and the work we continue to do.

Pros

I enjoyed working with most clients and creating meaningful connections with our local community.

Cons

Unfortunately, I have to give this company a negative review. From the outside looking in, the company looks professional and exciting. However, the internal atmosphere is far from that reality. The way that they treat their staff is disappointing. This is evident in the way staff are spoken to, the constant monitoring of emails, messages, personal social media accounts etc..., there is an expectation of complete "loyalty" to the company and personal boundaries are often crossed. In addition to that, there is a lack of integrity within upper management and while it may seem as if this company will provide you with an opportunity to grow and flourish within this field, that simply is not the case. The words that come to my mind while thinking about my time at 50th Parallel Public Relations is: micromanage, controlling, lack of integrity and disingenuous. I do not recommend working at this company.

It is most disappointing to see after a year and a half of employment with us that you chose to make such a public display of your dissatisfactions since your departure from the company. During your time with us, accommodations were made for adjusted work hours, personal leave and work from home days. Special consideration was also given to personal limitations since your personal comfort was always a top priority for us. You were celebrated both on your birthday and on your work anniversary and given company time to develop your skills. Coaching conversations were given about less than desirable conduct towards staff as well as one-on-one coaching with a professional business coach. On more than one occasion, you presented yourself in an unprofessional manner, lacked respect for your fellow co-workers, shown up late for client events and made decisions on behalf of the company without vetting with the rest of the team. Ultimately, you were given the option to either take accountability and grow with the team or make the decision to pursue a career elsewhere. You made the decision to leave so I ask that you be respectful to the team that enjoys and values their work as well as the important work we continue to do for our clients. We ask you to stop being defamatory and leaving false reviews about what it means to work for our company. We lifted and supported you when you were with us and hope that mutual respect can be given. Best of luck with your future endeavours in Edmonton. Should you like to have a further conversation, we welcome you to access the channels we established for open and honest communications since your departure.

Unprofessional & Fake

Pros

The pay was ok, but not worth it at the end of the day.

Cons

This company is talented at making themselves look a lot more professional than they are. Their company values are non existent. Management constantly moniters employees without their knowledge and or consent. Work environment was extremely cliquey, and there was an exuberant amount of drama and gossip within the top down management style of this office. Don't let their social media fool you. They know how to talk the talk, but can't keep employees for long. Stay far away and save yourself the trouble.

It is unfortunate that you have chosen to make such a public display of your dismissal from the company. During your 4 months with our company, you were only given respect and space to voice your opinion. On countless occasions, you were given the opportunity to express how you felt about your role and your continued development within it. You were offered ongoing training opportunities, one-on-one coaching time and your concerns, when brought up were acknowledged and a plan to remedy them was put in place. You were given much trust and freedom to expand your skills and take on more client work with the supervision of our past Creative Manager. It was constantly expressed that the future growth of you and your role were of high importance to us. Zero tolerance is given to gossip, bullying and theft of time and resources. Should you like to have more of a conversation, you are welcome to call or see me when you are up our way.
