Pros

6 Alpha gave me the chance to realise where I wanted to end up by introducing me to an industry i had never worked in. The industry is fairly interesting but gets old quickly as it is very niche.

Cons

When starting I was taken on as a temp and then offered full time employment. As they took staff on as temps it meant they couls get rid of them at a days notice rather than d what most companies do and give a probationary period. As such the company had a high turn over. The MD started off by saying it was flat hierarchy which was clearly not the case when they employed a number of managerial staff above the majority of staff meaning there was no room for progression. I understand the need to grow a business however do not ignore your staff when they wish to train, take on more of a role and help grow the company. All suggestions at us getting additional training were met with a i want you to stay where you are we can get someone else to do it. Additionally all of us were over worked in busy times often working extra hours overtime which were uncontracted and unpaid. Team meetings took a good half hr instead of 5 minute briefing as promised with random metafors like fighting off alligators or similar. Keep it to the point or dont be surprised when your staff havent done the work you wanted.

Pros

Good first job for an undergraduate. Friendly office staff (non-management). Annual pay rise and Christmas bonus, both discretionary however.

Cons

The Company comes across as a much larger organisation than it actually is. In reality, there are less than ten core staff who are stretched at the best of times, and are expected to work above and beyond 9am-5pm, with no overtime pay. The actual contracted hours are 8.30am-5.30pm, so be wary. Statutory sick pay only. The advice is do not get ill, as you will not receive any pay for the first four days - although if you happen to be one of management’s favoured staff members then your absences may be overlooked. If you have a long-term illness, be prepared to hand over your medical notes and then be sidelined by the Company as they will see you as a liability. The Company management are made up of ex-military employees; unfortunately they believe in treating civilians as though they were in the military too. This includes offensive and discriminatory remarks; including racism, sexism, and homophobia. Whilst these topics are generally not broached in the office, they often come up for conversation when out 'on-site' or meeting clients. Amongst other things, there is a culture of gossiping amongst the management staff, and even gossiping to their own subordinates about other managers. The Managing Director is eccentric to say the least; nothing will prepare you for him. Whilst passionate, he is easily distracted by new money-making schemes and ideas, and forgets to concentrate on the Company’s core business. He regularly spouts his long-winded rhetoric to his employees in an attempt to gain their trust and buy-in to his new projects. In addition, he comes across as highly volatile - he does not accept change very well, and does not like being challenged on any of his stances. He is incredibly petty, and it is a rarity that an employee leaves the company with his good wishes. He has been known on several occasions to refuse to write job references, and even filed the odd court injunction against a few former employees. Department heads have few management qualities, if any. When things are going well, they are more than happy to get involved, however if something is unsatisfactory they are loath to do much about it. They will often shy away from their managerial responsibilities of developing, appraising, and disciplining staff. If you have children, do not expect much flexibility in your work time. The Company comes first, there is little or no allowances for people who have parental duties. Maternity or paternity pay is the statutory minimum. There is no clear career progression. Be under no illusions - this is just a job. There is an incredibly high turnover of staff at the Company. Management hire and fire temporary workers regularly, however even permanent staff are not safe from being dismissed. There is a six-month probation, not to mention the Managing Director has forced out people on numerous occasions by way of redundancies etc. Most employees tend to leave between 1-2 years, inclusive of their temporary status. The Company wastes exorbitant amounts of money on unnecessary purchases. To name but a few: a glass whiteboard, an overly expensive red storage box, matching office desks for the MD and the meeting room, and three brand-new vans remaining unused.

Pros

-Good place to have a first ever job (if you don't have any experience yet) -Christmas Bonus (usually half of monthly paycheck) -Easy to commute from Bury or Ipswich

Cons

-Upper management, particularly the director, very poor with communication and generally act in a very condescending way to those who work beneath them. Example: always saying things like 'lets not blame anyone' and then immediately blaming everyone but themselves. -Bizarre atmosphere of 'you are lucky to work here' and undertones of threatening to fire you if you dare to challenge upper management. -No clear career development or progression, structure very flat. Your either at the top or you are not and you will never get there. People generally leave because they realize that despite wanting to bring in new ideas and products upper management does not care about anyone's idea's but there own. No ability to progress in any real way due to this
