Shady place to work

Pros

Flexibility, hourly rate, work from home

Cons

This company partakes in things that are borderline unethical. They hire nurses to be the callers, but what they really desire is telemarketers that follow a script exactly and really aren’t in the best interest of patients. As a nurse who is committed to giving quality nursing education and care, this is not a job for you. You are not able to give medical advice or disqualify people for things you KNOW they would not be qualified for the in the end. The culture is very clicky and non professional. If they don’t like you, they’ll cut you immediately, not allowing you any chances to rectify said ‘problems’.

Pros

I'll say this about my time at 83Bar, I learned a lot. Is fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants a training style? I'm sure this qualifies. That said, this trial-by-fire atmosphere is exactly what will push you to learn a very useful skillset for a career in marketing. The complete lack of organization and assigned roles also forces you to gain experience in a little bit of everything—copy writing, landing page design and optimization, email campaign creation, funnel reports and more. I've said this several times since getting abruptly tossed out into the cold with zero written or verbal warning after almost 2 years of employment (red flag, people!), 83Bar is a great stepping stone into what will ultimately be the rest of your career. Just make sure you have another job lined up after 6 months because your position there will never be guaranteed. My advice for those not dissuaded by this review: Soak up everything you can and find something better as soon as possible.

Cons

Two words: High turnover. The creative team (writers, strategists and designers) has been completely turned over twice in the last two years. When I started there were 5 of us. Within 1 year, they were all gone. One of them was fired on the spot simply for giving his two-week notice. After they were replaced, the brand new staff was almost completely turned over again before my departure! When I first started, my new coworker at the time always said the managers there wouldn’t last a day in a real agency. Management style can only be described as juvenile and passive aggressive. After providing zero instruction, you are berated for not creating whatever management silently expects. While I was there, an Email Campaign Manager was yelled at for not catching copywriting mistakes when, as you can tell by the job title, he was not a copy editor. If anything goes wrong, the atmosphere is very tense and you can expect to receive passive aggressive remarks both in-person and via slack. The fact of the matter is no one knows how to communicate in a constructive way, which may be the cause of high turnover. Competitive salary? Personally, I had to fight tooth and nail when my annual raise came up to get less than the industry average pay for the position I was promoted to. The writer who was fired for trying to give notice? He received a laughable annual raise, which I assume is the reason he found a new job in the first place. In retrospect, management probably should have seen that resignation coming. Lack of feedback is a main concern. There is little said when you execute a campaign successfully, but worse, when management is unhappy about something, nothing is said at all. This is particularly unsettling when asking for help, feedback or new assignments. Instead, you'll receive nothing for your efforts, except maybe a notice of termination. The good news: No verbal or written warnings mean you will be eligible for Unemployment Benefits, if you decide to apply with the Texas Workforce Commission. When a company is experiencing growth, you can expect opportunities to open up. This is not the case at 83Bar. Expect whatever position you are hired for to be the ceiling, especially if you have skills, the ability to learn quickly and ambition.

This former employee has made some strong, yet completely untrue statements in their review which I believe need to be addressed. I'm happy to hear that the former employee enjoyed his/her colleagues and flexible time. I'm proud of our entire team and the culture we have worked hard to build. We offer flexible time to all employees because we believe it allows staff to balance outside commitments, while ensuring business priorities are maintained. As for the cons, I'd like to address them individually: 1. "Leadership" is laughable The former employee is certainly entitled to his/her opinion. Our very low turnover rate, strong employee engagement and above-average tenure suggests this view isn't shared with the rest of our employees. 2. Growth is minimal at best Our revenue growth has doubled for each of the past two years and we have grown our team to help manage this growth. This has offered existing employee's the opportunity for advancement and additional learning/development for new employees. 3. Employee expectations are rarely clear This point can be taken a number of different ways. 83bar practices a self-driven management style where innovative and driven individuals thrive. Line managers are in constant communication with employees about current activities, priorities and requirements. Those seeking a more traditional management style, where employees are micro-managed, may do better elsewhere. 4. ZERO transparency from top level management Our management team is very transparent with financial performance, growth opportunities and the general state of our business. We hold regular company meetings to update employees as well as regular social events to ensure staff have an opportunity to meet and chat outside of work. 5. Pay is atrocious We constantly benchmark our pay structure against comparable roles where our staff are located. We offer highly competitive renumeration packages to all staff and our low turnover is a result of these efforts. 6. Management rarely speaks the truth As previously stated, we are highly transparent with all employees across a range of business activities. Our flat management structure allows for open communication channels between our leadership team, management team and employees. As the CEO of 83bar, I am proud of our creative, solution-oriented, dynamic environment. While our turnover remains very low, occasionally we need to separate with an employee who would be better suited in a different environment. We always go to great lengths to make it work, but sometimes it's better for both parties to move on. We are hiring. Come and join us.
