Worst Culture I've Ever Worked in..

Pros

It rains very little in Dubai

Cons

The Digital retail department is led from a place of insecurity due to the lack of experience in E-comm at the top which breeds a huge blame culture which spreads through the whole business, there is zero trust across teams, no autonomy at the middle management levels and a serious lack of teams wanting to take any responsibility. Shockingly, I found that senior management were more interested in covering their own backs and passing the buck than actually coming together to find a way to move forward and innovate together. It was the most hostile, least collaborative and least supportive work environment I’ve ever experienced. Nepotism, bullying, bureaucracy, blame culture and favoritism are all rife within the Al Tayer Digital senior management teams (which is wholly supported by a very poor excuse of a HR Department) There should be no place for this in a modern business employing international talent who do not accept these outdated and unfair practices. Instead of looking at the root of the problems to improve the culture, they would rather replace the talent who do not accept these bad practices and label them a "bad team fit". Those remaining in the company resort to being compliant with this terrible culture and are very difficult to work with... and so it continues. There is a serious lack of integrity and lots of personal agenda’s at work. No team spirit, more like a smash and grab and blame everyone else if anything goes wrong. I could not buy into the company’s ethics, or lack there of. I’m so very relieved to be out of such a toxic and stressful environment.

WORST COMPANY EVER

Pros

Larger salary than in the U.K.

Cons

Where to start????!!!! My time at this, quite frankly appallingly run company has been the most unenjoyable experience in my entire career. I have never known anything quite like it. Not only is every single 'benefit' offered to employees very cleverly disguised and set up to hoodwink staff out of large sums of money when they leave, but the HR systems and department as a whole is TOTALLY laughable. Possessing little to no expertise whatsoever, they have not a single clue about the people and positions they are recruiting for and make no effort to try and understand what it is that any of the teams do. I was tricked into a role that turned out to be the polar opposite of what was advertised and promised to me and, though I expressed this repeatedly in my appraisals, nothing was rectified. Moreover, the office politics are FARCICAL! How so many yet vastly over inflated egos are able to fit under one roof astounds me. Expect talentless, unorganised and highly uninspiring senior members of staff running the show without the faintest clue about how to lead ANYTHING let alone an entire team of people. Disgusting, dated office in the worst part of town. It feels like prison. Oh, and to top the whole experience off; if anything happens to your work equipment/laptop etc. they charge their own staff members for their own repairs. WHAT A JOKE. DO NOT WORK HERE. YOU WILL REGRET IT.

Pros

Vacation days, near train station

Cons

My first red flag with Al Tayer Group was when my start date kept getting delayed and delayed. I had already left my job and had given up my apartment to move to a new country. And now I found myself couch surfing with my savings diminishing by the day. I felt something wasn’t right but still continued on, and that decision haunts me to this day. From day one I felt unwelcomed. No introductions. No one to show me the ropes. The boss who hired me wouldn’t even meet with me the first month. I was left out of meetings for the area I was responsible for. Turns out this is totally the norm there. Almost everyone in a top leadership of that organization is unqualified and has been appointed through personal connections. The lack of basic retail and management skills of the leadership is downright appalling. I’ve seen presentations from VPs that were elementary and filled with errors. Even basic retail math like margin calculations cannot be done by this group. And while they are able to pull in strong talent in mid-level roles, the egos of those in positions leads to a lot of “you don’t know what you are talking about” so great talent is completely wasted. Management to them means shouting, intimidation and even violence. As other reviews have pointed out, racism is not only rampant but encouraged. Salaries are based on nationality and I have been told not to consider qualified candidates from particular countries due to ignorant stereotypes. When you leave the company, the process for visa cancellation and final pay can take months, when it should take about 1 week. This has left people with new jobs unable to start or has prevented them from paying critical bills. This is a very dangerous situation to be in any country, let alone the UAE. They ask for your passport when you leave under the guise of visa cancellation, yet a conversation with UAE immigration and my country’s consulate stated this is not necessary. They will hold your passport ransom until you agree to sign a document stating they don’t owe you money when in fact that they do. Regarding final pay, they will cheat you. While they state terms of bonus in the offer letter, it is not in the signed contract that is on file with the government. There have been numerous cases where bonuses were delayed for months and there would be mass layoffs just prior to payout. The only recourse is going to court, which not only takes months but also has a reputation for being corrupt. The experience at Al Tayer left me traumatized and I have had to go to therapy since leaving. I am not alone, having been in contact with other ex-employees who are still very angry and confused about their toxic experience with that organization. For anyone considering a role with Al Tayer Group, I highly urge you to reach out to ex-employees of the company through LinkedIn and hear our stories.
