Pros

I have worked at other consulting firms before and although most of them were concerned about their employees' well being I have never seen a company as transparent, accessible and genuinely invested in providing the best working conditions and support for their people as Access Sciences. Even in hard times the focus has always been to keep people employed and busy with tasks that will enrich them professionally and help the business over time.

Cons

The company relies a little too much on the competency of a few seasoned consultants. Methods and job aids exist but are in need of revision to bring them up-to-date with state-of-art thinking and increasing their usefulness for less experienced consultants.

Thank you for the feedback on the need to update our consulting methods with state-of-the-art thinking and useful tools. There are plans underway to build a Program Management Office to take on the task of codifying what we already do well and communicating outcomes. We look forward to making strides in this area!

Pros

Access Sciences provides flexibility to work from home or beyond traditional office hours, allowing employees to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Cons

Little room for advancement or job assignment diversification. A positive performance review doesn't necessarily yield a bonus or even a hearty "job well done". Company is employee-owned, yet it seems the employees don't really have visibility into the long-term plan of the company. The atmosphere in the office is highly tense and uncomfortable because people are worried about their job stability.

Thank you for your frank feedback. We strive for work-life balance to keep our employees happy and healthy. Access Sciences has developed a Consulting Career Model to address your concerns about advancement or job assignment diversification. Our consultants should work with their community leads to figure out the best role for themselves. It takes two-way communications to build a career. Our employees can be SMEs, industry experts, or project managers. These roles can change based on business need and it is critical for our employees to remain flexible in skill and attitude during challenging economic times. Our core values define who we are. One of our core values is Craftsmanship which espouses the need to cultivate talent and learning. We do this by shepherding a process for career guidance and support for our employees; not only when there is a job well done, but when there is a need for coaching. Another of our core values is Stewardship which points to the importance of the employees’ support of the long term growth of our employee-owned company. We will continue to communicate vision, core values, the “why we do what we do” with the employees through face-to-face meetings with leadership where and when possible and appropriate.
