Toxic Work Environment with High Turnover

Pros

Good pay and benefits A lot of white space Snacks A place where you can make friends This is a company with a strong relentless vision (although their internal motto that their products out-weigh the competition is cultish junk and derived from fear-based thinking)

Cons

Highly temperamental CEO who would yell at employees and lower morale; her way is the only way. My second month on the job, five of my coworkers complained about her leadership bitterly. They’ve been in beta for over 4(?) years now, with no pricing model on the website AFAIK - their market exclusively catered to the 1% of society in first-world countries. Some people work 60-70 hour work weeks while others a mere 40-45 A ton of toxic work politics - my coworkers were constantly telling each other how important it was to “have a shield” i.e. a manager who would stick up for them to leadership strife Poor management and leadership - in the Portland office, management is either micro-managerial or completely hands-off with little genuine care for individual development. No clear reason why people get promoted - no transparency or visibility. Burnout is very real at this company - during interviews I was told there was no turnover but after I joined I found that at least one person LEFT every single month I was there. The unlimited vacation rule is just a financial/tax loophole for the company to save money - employees are encouraged to NOT take vacation or rest.

Thank you for sending your thoughts! We're bummed you didn't have the best experience and we know we made plenty of mistakes early on. The past few years have been a tremendous learning experience for us all and we've taken many steps to help improve things across the board! A little over a year ago we added a tool that helped us track our employee engagement and other metrics so we can continue improving over time. To date, we’ve collected 1000s of data points and over 380 pieces of raw feedback from over 90% of the team. Here's our report card so far: Employee NPS +121% Personal Growth: +73% Ambassadorship: +58% Recognition: +58% Feedback: +12% Relationship with Peers: +36% Relationship with Managers: +35% Happiness & Wellness: +57% Satisfaction: +44% Alignment: +36% As a result of this feedback, we’ve added more opportunities for learning and development for all employees through personal and technical mentoring, executive coaching for new managers, and flexibility to attend relevant conferences, amongst others. On the communication front, we can always do better especially with the company split between 2 offices in different states. Lately, we’ve doubled down on our monthly All Hands to keep everyone informed of company goals and made our entire company roadmap and priorities available to all employees. While being in stealth and then beta for 4 years is unusual, we're not your average company. We set out with big ambitions and are tackling difficult technical, product and design challenges. Given the possibilities of what you can build on top of your own data platform, we wanted to make sure we were building the right thing and something that would be truly impactful to our users! We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors and are thrilled that we got the opportunity to work with you!

Pros

We've built a stellar team in all departments. The offices in both Los Altos and Portland are close-knit, and the spaces are fun and inviting. Our users are super engaged and helpful as we prepare to launch an amazing product. I rarely care about corporate values, since they're usually BS, but we actually live by ours (including no a-holes, true empathy + passion for the user). This is a rare opportunity to work for a company that matters, is poised to make a huge impact in the market, and be part of an incredible team. I'm proud to work here.

Cons

Not a great place for folks looking for a 9-5 or don't want to be challenged. The pacing can take a bit of getting used to since we're often doing multiple projects/pushes at the same time, but that also keeps things lively and helps avoid stagnation.
