Pros

The pay is good, and the policy team does great work.

Cons

AEE does not support employees in any way, shape or form through leadership and the MD's. Advance Energy Economy is a predatory organization that catfished me on LinkedIn and nearly ruined my career due to the organizations lack of integrity and structure, which I did not want to be associated with my character or reputation. The board retreat is a drunk college frat party (they have security cameras, as much as the GC hates it), at a 5 star hotel. What a ridiculous waste of donor money meant to save the planet. The policy team does great work in terms of progressing clean energy policies for member companies, but I have absolutely no idea why there is a sales or marketing team, and I was on it until I resigned. They pitched it to me as a non-profit and acted as if I could get into policy work, but they use predatory sales tactics to rope in companies through misleading statements. I nearly wasted a year at AEE until I realized staying with AEE would ruin my career due to a lack of leadership. They also violated my civil rights, and invade employee privacy. Do not work for AEE. To clarify any malice in this note, I would like to address that I resigned due to poor leadership, and I was not fired. Be aware of AEE if you are being headhunted by LinkedIn recruiters, there are much more impactful jobs out there where the budget is allocated to the interests of the member companie's mission, and not a bar tab. Trust me, I am looking. Update: Advanced Energy Economy called my father asking to have this review taken down after I asked them to stop contacting me & him. Talk about predatory. My father is 71. Thank the good lord I am moving on to bigger & better things. I'm an associate employee with minimal savings, so I pray they do not use their connections & power to break my family down and sue me for telling my side of the story when it comes to my experience at Advanced Energy Economy. I'm still willing to risk it all and tell my story, however.

Pros

You’ll have the privilege of working with some truly passionate and motivated colleagues, a few of whom (more on that later) are decidedly experts in the field. The org is very remote work friendly with the option to come into the DC office. The benefits are overall pretty good and the office is closed the week between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. There is also a generous professional development benefit and you’ll be given plenty of opportunities to attend conferences and other industry events. Coworkers genuinely care about you as an individual.

Cons

Some of the more senior level folks talk like Kendall Roy with lots of references to “disruption” and “winning the win,” which, like Kendall, they use to obfuscate their surface level understanding of the industry. The annual raise increases are pretty poor. Your only hope of a decent raise is a promotion which you can forget about unless you are willing to completely sacrifice your personal life to meet their unrealistic standard for “going above and beyond.” This alone is enough to breed discontent, but you will also see people with less relevant experience hired to an open management position before an internal good performer is promoted to the same role or even reassigned to a lateral open acquisition. As a result, the turnover of junior staff is very high since their best shot at career advancement is to leave the organization. To be clear, I think this is less to do with mal intent from leaders and more to do with ignorance and a lack of appreciation for the amount of work that’s needed to complete the responsibilities and deliverables the organization expects of you. As a pan- technology trade organization, you will get pulled in multiple different directions and the workload can at times feel insurmountable. If you try to raise concerns, you will be heard out at best, but no solutions or change of course will be offered to you. With the high staff turnover, your workload will increase further, which makes the minuscule annual raises sting harder. The organization’s DEIJ efforts are undermined by some of the more toxic individuals in leadership, one of whom opposed putting pronouns in email signatures because they had concerns over branding guidelines/ brand consistency (???). It left a bad taste and it’s for this reason that I ultimately call my experience negative overall. Sadly the organization has lost some well respected individuals from within the industry over the last year and it remains to be seen if the recruiters will be able to find candidates of similar caliber to replace them.

Pros

-AEE does amazing work on clean energy policy and anyone should be proud to work here -Company culture is second to non. AEE is a remote organization, but does an fantastic job maintaining strong culture -Profit sharing program which is rare for non-profit orgs -Lots of opportunities to grow within your role and take on more responsibilities (con is that you have a hard time getting extra compensation for those extra responsibilities)

Cons

-CEO is kind of arrogant, but you don't have much interaction with him so that's okay -Annual pay increases are pretty pathetic -Decisions made by upper management in a vacuum. Don't consult lower level employees and they are on the ones cleaning up the mess
