Pros

Money, benefits, location, area, close to downtown

Cons

IT dept is being torn apart right now. It used to be the best dept to work in. It's not anymore. It's not a Safe to Say environment anymore. There are snitches in the department. They are not promoting from within. They are bringing outside folks instead. They are trying to get rid of the older and bring in newer. They are top heavy which they never were before. Many employees are leaving and going elsewhere. More are looking to get out as well. It is scary.

First and foremost, we encourage you to discuss these concerns with your leader or HR client consultant. Next, external expertise and resources are critical to help us deliver solutions to our customers in a scalable way. But this external support does not take away from career growth and development opportunities for our current workforce and we hope you can take advantage of all that Ameren offers you. Finally, please make room on your schedule to attend our face-to-face, department-wide meetings which are also a great source of information regarding our future direction.

Pros

At the mid to lower level of management, people really do care about their work and their team members. Day-to-day, it is a nice place to work because of this. There are a lot of very knowledgeable and very helpful people working at Ameren.

Cons

This company is run by the good ol’ boys club. Don’t expect anything to change unless it has something to do with shareholder profits. After being 100% remote since the pandemic, leadership is now telling everybody to be in the office full-time. Even people who were hired on as fully remote positions. A glint survey is done every year asking for management feedback, the same feedback is given by the employees year after year, yet nothing is done to change anything. Annual salaries are consistently below market rate, this has even been recognized by HR yet nothing has been done about it.

Pros

Location, benefits, fitness center, islands of good / bright folks trying to punch thru the bureaucracy (and - up until last 12-16 months - the great work/life culture and balance)

Cons

Ameren Information Technology / Digital has undergone substantial change in the past 12-16 months in an attempt to reshape what was arguably a very legacy culture with not a whole lot of fresh thinking. As I consider myself one of those existing employees working to constantly innovate and get things done (in spite of that legacy mindset that does exist here), I was initially excited at these changes and for the first several months had a very optimistic view of the future direction. In my role I deal with nearly all aspects of the IT organization and have experienced more and more personnel sharing w/me how disheartened they are with the direction (or lack of) these past 12 months. Whole new layers of senior leadership installed at great cost with little or no awareness of the work going on beneath them and making too-hasty changes that throw the good out with the bad - and worse, an apparent knee-jerk negative opinion to anyone who has been working for the organization more than 5-10yrs ("you were part of the problem if you were already here"), which prevents the new leaders from gaining valuable insight from those who want to help with getting that legacy thinking to change positively. The word ‘toxic’ has been used by several when describing their opinion of the new IT/Digital culture… I know of several outstanding people who have departed as a result of this negative shift in culture and know of several more who are actively seeking / looking to depart (some who have only been here 2-3 yrs). This is a shame, because one of the great reasons to work at Ameren (previously) would have been the culture and work/life balance. It’s very disappointing.
