Toxic environment of bullies

Pros

Lots of dedicated non management employees who genuinely care about nurses.

Cons

LOOK AT THE NUMBER OF REVIEWS WITH THUMBS UP THAT ARE NEGATIVE COMPARED TO POSITIVE REVIEWS FROM FORMER EMPLOYEES. It's a TERRIBLE place to work! Ironic that a major issue ANA wants to help nurses address is workplace bullying when it is so egregious and rampant at their offices. It is very telling that during the time I was there, the entire HR department turned over three or four times. They even outsourced the function, brought it back in house and then it turned over a few more times because no one in good faith can work there long or hire others to work there knowing how petty, backstabbing, "out for just yourself' the atmosphere is at the association. Management turns a blind eye and/or in some cases encourages it in order to insulate themselves from the membership and volunteers who have no clue what really happens there. Many, many people are/were aware of the toxic atmosphere at ANA when I was there. I even went to far as to name names, to several upper level management and HR when I left, but the same bad apples are still at ANA, some even moved up the ranks, while SO, SO many dedicated and talented people have been fired or moved on. There is no real leadership or vision other than retaining members so upper level management gets paid. The constant "reactive" nature to outside events only shifts already overburdened workloads so that the current crisis at the time takes priority but no other responsibilities are ever taken off. They try to be everything to everyone, so can't accomplish anything. Look at the IT department/membership billing/state association projects over budget, underperforming that never worked to start. Updates are already doomed to fail because management is too busy placing blame so they can cover their butts. I truely hope dues paying members and nurse leaders wise up, but alas I'm not optimistic because it's gone on so long.

Pros

Great location. Paid week off during Christmas. Really enjoyed some of my coworkers who are still friends of mine even though I am no longer there.

Cons

From reading the reviews, it looks like this place hasn't changed in the last 2 years. It was the worst company that I have ever worked for. All of the other reviews about the culture and higher management bullying is very true. I have never experienced more manipulative bullying and backstabbing at any other "professional" environment than I did working here. Too many unnecessary procedures and meetings that takes up time to actually get work done. The only place I have ever been reprimanded for working overtime (even though I was salary) to get tasks completed. The department that I was in made you document what mistakes you made (from little to large) on a spreadsheet with everyone else. They claim it is to document corrective action and to learn from mistakes. It is actually a document that is easily used against you if you get on the wrong side of your manager. Too many layers to get anything approved and too many people making decisions with different interests that cause fighting between departments. It becomes like a territory war within a company all under one roof. The turnover rate is unbelievable, no consistency. Tons of surveys and focus groups that have no results other than discussing the obvious issues. Belonging to a mandatory union (and paying dues) is suppose to help the employees. They just sit and try to mediate with HR on serious issues but it is always in the managers favor. Even when the Union and HR openly disagree with managers their hands seem tied. The stress level is so high is actually starts affecting your physical and mental health. During my exit from ANA, the union even reached out to me to see if I was suicidal because of the harassment I was experiencing. I was told that "It wouldn't be the first time that we have had to deal with suicidal employees." Well, there is your sign that something is seriously wrong with this company.... I have so much PTSD from the ANA experience that I have completely left the field that I was an expert in to start a new career in another field so I do not ever have to go through that again. If you accept a position with this company after reading all of these reviews, you can't say you haven't been warned.

Pros

Decent benefits (401k best I’ve seen)

Cons

Absolute joke of a work environment. Every manager seems to be a bully giving no type of real leadership or direction to their team. Everyone talks about each other behind their back. Terrible chemistry and work morale to suffer through each day. CEO stepped down, probably to avoid this major headache. Have never seen so many grown adults operate like high schoolers. Negative energy everywhere you turn. They try to hide it with the pot lucks, culture transformation, values, etc. If you are a minority, you’d better enjoy significantly lower pay, positions, and be looked down on. They have managers and supervisors in place who have no idea what leadership or developing talent requires. If you look at the top you’ll see similar faces and many things in common.
