Don't Walk - Run Away

Pros

Really nice facility Good people to work with at the lower levels Great sense of companionship with your fellow galley slaves The work is generally interesting and challenging If you have the right manager, you'll always have the tools you need. If you don't, well... Positive job outlook - the nuclear industry isn't going anywhere for at least one more generation AMS will hang onto you as long as you'll stay, because so few will You'll never wonder what our company president looks like, because his face is plastered everywhere Office location is convenient to most of Knoxville You get a broad depth of experience in all things related to the nuclear power industry

Cons

200 Hours / month expected minimum - you're lucky if that's all you have to work Salaries are not comparable to the level of effort - most young graduates are started out in the 10th percentile President of company controls every aspect of business, regardless of his capability to do so 70%+ turnover rate President of the company believes that the 70% of people who leave are the problem, not him Tries to run the company like "a family," which really means you swear familial loyalty to him and he does nothing for you 401(k) match is PITIFUL. Only up to $2000, regardless of your contribution, and can't start contributing for a YEAR after you sign on Comp time is paid out at 1/2 day for every 1 weekend day worked...but only if you're on travel at a customer's facility. No comp time after you cross the "$90k/year threshold." Pay for salaried employees is done illegally - once a month Everybody operates in "don't make the boss mad" mode all the time Lots of square pegs in round holes - like mechanical engineers overseeing the design of high speed RF measurement circuitry President's moods are unpredictable, as is the fallout from them President thinks that every single person is replaceable, and doesn't care about turnover rate President will pay lip service to the hard workers, but has yet to come through on many of his promises Management from above is either micro or throw you in and see if you can swim - zero mentoring or real resources available to younger people on the executive path Member of staff actually killed himself at least partially due to the job

Pros

I have been meaning to write a review for AMS since I left the company a little over a year ago. I held off writing because every time I would start, there were just too many problems with the company and the management for me to explain. The review titled "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" eloquently describes a lot of the issues I had with the company, and I echo every sentiment in that writeup. I was a software developer, so I'll add a little bit of that spin and add a few of my own feelings. PROS: Not many as a software developer. They use an obscure language for programming called LabVIEW that doesn't have many uses. This language is so much different than standard programming languages that getting better at LabVIEW doesn't translate to getting better as a developer overall, and in fact, might make you worse because the line of thinking is so different. The buildings are very nice, most of the time you get your own office (only due to the egregious turnover rate), and the other workers are generally very nice, not including management.

Cons

CONS: My experience was near identical to the review I mentioned earlier. I was a fresh college graduate with no gauge for how post-college life would be. Dr. Hashemian took advantage of that naïveté and offered a low salary with the promise that after 3-6 months, it would be raised to market value. As I was terrified of not having a job after college, I took the offer, and after 7-8 months with no salary increase (despite a title change), I left the company. I was yet another college grad in their rinse and repeat cycle of getting naive college grads to take embarrassingly low pay to do grunt work. I very quickly found another job paying 20% more with 30-40% less hours and 10000% less stress. Now after just 18 months at the new job, I'm making a 50% higher salary than I was at AMS, and rarely working more than 40 hours a week, with ACTUAL quarterly flex time. I don't say these things to brag, I say them so that fresh college grads don't think that a company like AMS is the norm. The software development group was a microcosm of the company overall. The way that the senior developers and managers would solve problems was to go in someone's office and scream at each other until someone gave up. Many times I would hear from my office a manager or senior dev screaming at another manager "We don't do it that way! Because that's stupid!" or other ridiculous insults.

Pros

Can’t think of one. In absolute honesty.

Cons

1. Below market pay 2. No work life balance 3. Extremely poor work culture 4. Extremely unacceptable work requirements 5. Overall: extremely toxic environment This is a short review, but captures the highlights of other reviews on this company which are 100% accurate. My experience at this company was very negative and I honestly want to save as many people as I can. I moved on to a much better job and have had the opportunity to facilitate the escape of current workers who are now happily employed and making a difference already in the group that I serve.
