Pros

Really nice facility Good people to work with at the lower levels Great sense of companionship with your fellow galley slaves The work is generally interesting and challenging If you have the right manager, you'll always have the tools you need. If you don't, well... Positive job outlook - the nuclear industry isn't going anywhere for at least one more generation AMS will hang onto you as long as you'll stay, because so few will You'll never wonder what our company president looks like, because his face is plastered everywhere Office location is convenient to most of Knoxville You get a broad depth of experience in all things related to the nuclear power industry

Cons

200 Hours / month expected minimum - you're lucky if that's all you have to work Salaries are not comparable to the level of effort - most young graduates are started out in the 10th percentile President of company controls every aspect of business, regardless of his capability to do so 70%+ turnover rate President of the company believes that the 70% of people who leave are the problem, not him Tries to run the company like "a family," which really means you swear familial loyalty to him and he does nothing for you 401(k) match is PITIFUL. Only up to $2000, regardless of your contribution, and can't start contributing for a YEAR after you sign on Comp time is paid out at 1/2 day for every 1 weekend day worked...but only if you're on travel at a customer's facility. No comp time after you cross the "$90k/year threshold." Pay for salaried employees is done illegally - once a month Everybody operates in "don't make the boss mad" mode all the time Lots of square pegs in round holes - like mechanical engineers overseeing the design of high speed RF measurement circuitry President's moods are unpredictable, as is the fallout from them President thinks that every single person is replaceable, and doesn't care about turnover rate President will pay lip service to the hard workers, but has yet to come through on many of his promises Management from above is either micro or throw you in and see if you can swim - zero mentoring or real resources available to younger people on the executive path Member of staff actually killed himself at least partially due to the job

Pros

AMS can offer a rewarding career in the nuclear industry. The company is committed to developing new technologies that support both existing and next‑generation nuclear power plants, and engineers have real opportunities to contribute ideas. In my experience, if you bring a good idea forward and management believes in it, they will support you in developing it. The work is meaningful, there are a lot of travel opportunities, and the variety of projects keeps things engaging. AMS also offers generous paid time off (PTO). We often get a week or two off around Christmas and New Year that doesn’t require using your PTO. For anyone who enjoys technical challenges, innovation, and traveling to nuclear facilities, AMS is a great place to work.

Cons

Communication across teams and management could be clearer and more consistent. With so many projects and initiatives going on, information doesn’t always flow as smoothly as it could, and sometimes expectations or decisions aren’t communicated clearly. The company has worked to address this over the last few years and made significant improvements.

Pros

The company has always treated me well and I hardly ever hear any major complaints from others. Over the years, management has adopted better strategies for addressing our concerns and improving our work environment. The job is in the nuclear field and frequently requires being on site at customer facilities so shift work, long hours, and adherence to a lot of rules and procedures is expected. Fortunately, the company makes up for it with good benefits and extras for the hard work put in to improve work life balance. The pay and annual raises has always been great and above the cost of living increase. This company has never had a layoff or negative year.

Cons

Fall and spring are busy seasons for travel. 12 hour shifts and 24 hour coverage are normal during that time (being in the office is a more conventional work schedule (8-5) though). We are an engineering company that requires good customer support focus, which means you have to go the extra mile,
