Pros

Fun team / smart colleagues. You won't take the work home with you. If you are a part-time writing specialist, this is a good gig to do flexible, remote work.

Cons

High turnover rate, no benefits, low pay. Management justifies low salaries by claiming that education doesn't pay well, but in reality this is not a company that prioritizes education. Profit and reputation are more important to management than student development and college prep. There is no opportunity to grow in this company. The management philosophy from the chinese headquarters changes every season, leaving the whole team scrambling to catch up. The first half of the year is spent without any work coming in. My advice is if you have a competitive degree (a requirement to work here), save yourself a year of misdirection and apply elsewhere. Not a place to develop a career.

Pros

Student submissions take place entirely through an online portal, which makes it convenient to provide students with feedback. Remote work is good for current university students and recent graduates.

Cons

Workload is entirely concentrated over a 3 month period starting from October until December. Do not expect to have any semblance of a steady stream of income otherwise. You will be told that work is guaranteed at a 15 hour/week workload over the first half of the year, but this is undeniably false. You will simply not receive any correspondence until the end of the following year when the admission season begins once again. All throughout the application season, I felt extremely uncomfortable with expectations of my editing. Oftentimes, I was encouraged to use heavy direct editing where I would end up writing lengthy paragraphs for students with overt approval from the upper management. Although I raised these concerns, I was told that students pay a great deal of money for our services and expect that the finished product is near perfect, regardless of whether or not it is the students’ own words. This company does not seem to be concerned with student learning or education whatsoever.

Pros

1. Colleagues are wonderful, and there are numerous opportunities for collaboration. 2. Location in a WeWork building offers amenities and frequent events.

Cons

1. No opportunities to give feedback to the management of the NY office. The organization claims to be a flexible and fun startup, but in reality it is anything but. 2. Virtually all new ideas from Educational Consultants are discouraged and rejected by management in China. 3. Projects are discontinued without any notice or explanation after significant time and resources are allocated to their development. 4. Team members are frequently asked to withhold information from their colleagues and to provide management with information about colleagues’ personal matters. 5. Management pits employees against one another and shares confidential information with other team members in private meetings. 6. Toxic office culture and management style. Low pay with no opportunities for advancement. Promotions are given without any raises and annual bonuses are substantially reduced without rhyme or reason.
