Pros

Some of the benefits are competitive. The young filmmaking students are the best of the org and must be protected.

Cons

Several recent, detailed employee accounts exist addressing unchecked worker abuse at Appalshop. Many former employees have spoken out, but media outlets are in their pockets and leadership has historically used legal avenues to silence employees with legitimate grievances. Ongoing SA, narcotics use, unsafe working conditions, bullying, sexism, racism, all on the clock: I was there for all of it. The senior board members actively work to shield & resource abusers when statements are published while concealing the company’s many violations. They actively reject growth and change. No one should support this organization, much less fund it; but they’ve had foundation program officers fooled for half a century. A sad cycle of abuse enabled by the collective in order to preserve an illusion of equity that don’t exist there and never have.
