Toxic culture, terrible management

Pros

Occasional snacks in the kitchen

Cons

Arbor Scientia is badly mismanaged sweatshop that runs on intimidation tactics and bullying. Staff are required to do absolutely whatever the client wants, and employees are routinely expected to pull all-nighters and work over holiday weekends. On top of this, new hires are given scant if any training for the tasks they are expected to perform, then harangued in front of the CEO if they make any errors. As a result, people are paranoid and planning their exit. The fear-based standard of operating is made worse by the fact that management is friendly to your face, but ruthlessly cutting behind your back. Consequently, employee turnover is extremely rapid and morale is at rock bottom. The few people who have drunk the company kool-aid are careening towards a breakdown. Prospective employees should be aware that Arbor’s strategy is to hire accomplished people who are desperate to get their foot in the door in the field of medical writing, then work them to complete exhaustion at 30% or more below market rate. This is likely because the company cannot retain talent and is therefore continually severely under-staffed.

Petty, Condescending Management

Pros

The only pro I can think of for this company is that you can work from home occasionally.

Cons

I worked at Arbor for about 2 years in which about a quarter of the project management team quit. Management is petty and will demean you for the smallest mistakes. Communication between teammates is terrible with no one really knowing what tasks to perform. You will be expected to be available 24/7 for clients who will contact you late into the evening on your personal cell phones which you are of course expected to give to clients Further you will be expected to satisfy all even the most ridiculous of client whims. I'm certain that Arbor can only pull only the bottom of the barrel clients. The disorganization on the clients' side is so ridiculous I'm sure they are losing their companies millions of dollars due to mismanagement. On Arbor's end we will be expected to adhere to strict timelines no matter how impossible, while the clients will spend months dragging their feet signing essential contracts often forcing people to either wait for long periods to be able to work or to work "at risk". I would suggest anyone who is considering a position at Arbor to look elsewhere. The toxic work culture doesn't even make it worthwhile as a stepping stone to a better position.

Clueless Management, Toxic Company Culture

Pros

Holiday Break was nice. That's about it, and it's not a god send when they have you traveling for 3/4 of the year. It's the least they can do.

Cons

I would like to start this review by stating how terrible the management is (or lack thereof) at this company. President and COO of the company have no idea how subordinates are being mistreated by their direct reports. If the president or COO happens to be reading this review, I recommend you take a hard look at how your most senior personnel treat their subordinates. Especially, I saw on multiple occasions how the younger employees were picked upon. It is impossible to trust anyone at the company. At any point in time someone will screw you over for personal leverage. Including LYING. The employees were treated rather inhumanely. Oftentimes during work travel I witnessed members of the team being told they “could not eat” or “could not have a break” (completely illegal) This is not a joke, this is not a lie, I heard it with my own ears. Putting people down to make yourself look better is the name of the game at Arbor Scientia. Lying to get ahead, and treating subordinates so poorly are just something happening day to day at the job. I can account for multiple times members of the company were publicly humiliated in front of the client, in front of senior management, even the company founder (A doctor) who comes in ever so often. The inmates are running the asylum here at this company. If you are in a management position you are only out for yourself and everyone else comes down to be treated like dirt. If you aren’t with the “in” at the company you are dirt. Remember…you are treated as worthless as dirt. No use in applying here if you are a new college graduate, please run the other way. You will be promised you will follow a career path, make a higher salary, gain more experience, etc. It is NOT TRUE. I saw multiple employees come in after college with high hopes and sparkling personalities… only to have it washed away by cruel team members and management. Team members are unable to speak up to help themselves because at times when they have done so they were laughed at or teased for speaking up. Employees are threatened on the daily if the smallest mistake is made. Typically those threatening aren’t even the senior management but rather the upper management of each “team” in the company.
