Pros

Good pay. Some wider benefits. Some good individuals.

Cons

Random, irrational and unpredictable management behaviour. They present as friendly and intelligent however in reality the management are a kind of personality driven cult that can victimise and turn against an individual very randomly without warning or reason. Management lines and objectives are often confused, and I wonder whether this is because many of the managers are young and lack experience or qualifications or any training as managers. There is also a question over maturity. Similarly, they also provide no training or support for staff and appear to have no proper processes or checks and balances to protect staff from inappropriate behaviour. Your performance may be reviewed, but in an opaque way and potentially without even your input or awareness. Unfortunately, as managers may have no knowledge or understanding of what work you have been doing, the review may bear no relationship to your actual performance or contribution. Therefore, if your results are good and even better than anything else they have previously achieved, they may not notice or may unwittingly credit this to someone else. At the same time, almost completely unproductive staff, some of whom may possess visual qualities may do well and be rewarded. This in turn raises serious ethical and behavioural concerns as well as being very detrimental to morale. Oddly, running parallel to this rather random management culture, they encourage long hours, weekend working and evening working. This is almost dickensian in nature at times. This strange cultural mix promotes a strange, cult like, team vibe but if you rise to the challenge you will find it exhausting and unsustainable, and ultimately, even if you have achieved high outputs, they may not notice or recognise that. They aim to employ top graduates but some of the managers are not themselves of sufficient calibre to manage these individuals and ultimately you should be aware they actively plan to selectively dismiss a significant proportion of new starters without any clear guiding process. Therefore, obtaining a job here is very high risk overall. This means that talented individuals may be drawn by the salary and initial warmth of some managers, work incredibly hard, achieve great outcomes, show loyalty and commitment and ultimately this may count for nothing at all. Overall, a very divisive and unproductive culture that is actually quite poisonous over time. I wonder how this company can possibly succeed in the long run. For now though it appears they have investment funding propping them up so I think the good pay will continue and the culture will only continue or potentially deteriorate. I would say if you are desperate for employment then yes they are worth considering, as they pay well, but you need to be ready to experience a very random and harsh work environment. If you are looking for a steady career then I recommend you look elsewhere.

Good product but poor overall working culture

Pros

The product is good and many people who work here are hard-working, kind-hearted, and excited about what they’re building.

Cons

Some of management are completely inappropriate and openly value nepotism above meritocracy, which is honestly a shame. Since being there, there's been a weird environment where individuals who work hard and produce strong outcomes are, increasingly, not rewarded or recognised, but those who are good at empty talk (whilst producing minimal to no outcomes at all) are heralded due to their connections. It’s not a fair environment, and doesn’t even try to be, and this is genuinely sad to see. The team like to say they move too fast to recognise those who do work hard, but the reality is that some individuals use this as an excuse to be belittling, directionless, and often passive aggressive to those below them. I learnt quickly that little value is placed on genuine teamwork. Selfish work is praised, but the invisible labour that goes into real company initiatives and developments is discounted. This is also a problem when it comes to retaining top-level talent. A huge emphasis is placed on acquiring this talent in the first place, yet no effort is made to incentivise these individuals staying. If you’re smart and looking for a short stint then maybe you can stomach it. However, if you genuinely care about the company’s mission, values, culture, and teamwork, don’t be surprised if you’re quickly treated poorly.

Pros

Exciting product, growing fast and interesting tech to work on. Good pay.

Cons

Very burnout-centric, and it's embraced as a culture. You won't have a manager who cares about you personally. There are no 1:1s, just a monthly performance assessment. A lot of tech debt with not-great plans on how to pay it back. Very few tests. High pressure to ship features quickly, but engineers are blamed when things don't work.
