You will not be able to take time off ever, bad culture

Pros

On an individual level, the people are nice and very talented. Too bad they are massively overworked. Case in point: even though New Years Day was supposed to be a company holiday, many colleagues were working because the culture is one where you must be working at all times. Colleagues are regularly working at 10pm at night, so do not expect to take time off. It's a true start up in the worst ways. They finally added a minimal company 401k match.

Cons

The company will take away vacation days without notice. In previous years, we were given the week between Christmas and New Years off. Not in 2023 or beyond. Employees must "earn it" by meeting goals everyone knows are unattainable, which feels like executives dangling a carrot in front of employees to get every last ounce of work out of them when everyone knows the goal won't actually be met. Also, the company just took away their Mental Health Days. We used to have 4, now we have 0...but they added 2 PTO days. So basically we just lost 2 vacation days. And let me tell you, morale is low. Worse, the company said the few sick days you get could be used as mental health days....but then the CEO came in and said basically the opposite and that sick days are basically for if you're having surgery not "just because you don't feel like answering the phone that day." Ouch. There are also large amounts of black out dates when PTO cannot be taken for any reason. Have a family wedding during the last two weeks of any quarter? You won't be able to go, even if you've met your personal goal that quarter. You might be able to get time for a funeral. Maybe. The whole culture is you should always be working. If you're not working until 7-8pm at night, you're not working hard enough. You will be called into spur of the moment 6:45pm meetings for no reason. If you ask to take a sick day (or even a half-sick day), it's actively discouraged. Encountered that first hand.

Thank you for taking the time to provide such detailed feedback on your experience. The experience you shared is troubling to read and not aligned with company policy or our values. As a current employee, we strongly encourage you to reach out to the People team to have a follow-up conversation to ensure you have an employee experience that is consistent with our standards and values. Our employees are extremely important to us and your well being and mental health are a top priority, which is why we offer benefits including comprehensive mental health resources. We provide sick days that can be used for mental health reasons, including an employee’s illness or to care for a family member. In addition, we offer a range of time off benefits, including vacation, thirteen company-paid holidays, and three floating holidays. I hope you will decide to reach out to the People team, we're here to support you and are dedicated to making Axios HQ not only a successful business but a supportive and enjoyable place to work. Update: Thank you again for this review, and your advice to management. We hope over the last week you have felt heard and appreciate the response from leadership on this topic. HQ prides itself on being a feedback-rich culture, and that starts with leadership hearing from our employees and taking action when needed. We are not perfect, but hope that you feel the actions and response taken this week show how much we value what our employees have to say and how they feel. We also still encourage you to reach out to the People team to talk through any other concerns you may have!

Pros

Great team members that are very knowledgeable and passionate about the product and the work they do

Cons

This company once had direction. There was clarity, purpose, and a sense that we were building something meaningful. But over time, it’s devolved into a constant identity crisis. Decisions are made behind closed doors, and when they finally reach the rest of us, it’s usually because the consequences can no longer be hidden — benefits slashed, people laid off, priorities scrambled. What was once a focused, mission-driven startup now feels lost in the noise of its own mismanagement. And let’s be clear: scaling didn’t expose a stronger foundation — it exposed cracks. HQ used to feel like family. Now it’s unrecognizable. Distant. Hollow. And on the topic of diversity — every single engineer laid off in the last round was from a diverse background. These were some of the most talented, impactful people on the team, and they played a critical role in shaping the product. Their reward? Laid off with no warning. Why? To pad the books for an acquisition. So no, don’t come here. It used to be something special, but whatever made it great has been buried under short-sighted decisions and leadership that clearly has no idea where it’s headed.

Pros

fully remote work setup, which gives you flexibility and a good work-life balance. diverse team of individual contributors who are talented and passionate about what they do.

Cons

leadership and exec team lacks diversity, which affects decision-making and the overall culture. the product isn’t very competitive, making it hard to stay motivated and keep up with changing expectations. priorities are always shifting, causing confusion and making it tough to focus on what really matters. the company talks about valuing transparency, but a lot of decisions are made behind closed doors, leaving us in the dark. most managers don’t seem equipped to lead, adding to the chaos and frustration. high turnover, with many people leaving because of these ongoing issues. team members held accountable for outcomes influenced by factors beyond their control, particularly when potential clients don't move forward with product.
