A step backwards.

Pros

It’s better than being unemployed. Free breakfast once a week and a firm lunch once a month. Jeans on Friday.

Cons

Overbearing, incompetent, and ineffective management. Moral is very poor. Training of office procedures and processes is essentially left to the individual employees to pursue and there is very little consistency or structure. Office rules are unnecessarily restrictive (no food at your desk) and applied randomly depending on the mood or preferences of the manager. The so-called office ‘culture’ is cliquish, puerile, and at times, openly hostile. There is insufficient administrative support for dealing with inter office conflict, employees who feel marginalized or treated unfairly are left little or no recourse but to quit. Remedial work is doled out as a punitive measure for questioning procedure. Advancement is nearly impossible as the goal posts are constantly moving (what is right today is wrong tomorrow) and even experienced support staff will find themselves underutilized, bored, and frustrated.

Pros

Many great staff members that were friendly and professional. Some great attorneys.

Cons

The Executive Director micromanages everything. She's friendly only to certain staff members and makes life miserable for those that she doesn't like. She's unprofessional and caustic. She hires managers that she know she can manipulate and pushes out the ones she knows think for themselves. When benefits increased by more than double one year, the HR manager told her that people weren't going to be able to afford to work there because of the benefits increase and her response was, "too bad, they can get a job elsewhere." Easy for someone with her salary to say about the folks that are making pennies. The morale is terrible due to management treating employees like children - no eating at the desk, no headphones/ear buds, many federal holidays aren't observed. Very rarely close due to inclement weather, which left one employee's car stuck in snow on the side of the road in a snow storm. The person thankfully had a friend with four wheel drive to pick them up off the side of the road. Benefits are sub-par at best. No short term disability. Basically, unemployment would be better than this place.

Terrible place for staff

Pros

Most of the attorneys and staff. They provide bagels every Wednesday and free lunch once a month (which is basically first come first serve) because tiny lunchroom does not accommodate everyone and people are forbidden to take food back to desks.

Cons

In my 15+ years of working at law firms, this was worst work environment I have ever worked in. The executive director runs the lives of the staff, regular emails are sent out about how to dress, no eating at desks, no personal conversations and other petty topics. There is a very high turnover rate and low office morale.
