my concerns regarding the constant micro-management I have been experiencing in my role as the Store manager at Bolt & Buckle Brisbane Arcade for the last 11 months This situation has unfortunately led to increased levels of anxiety and stress for me.
The environment at Bolt & Buckle has become toxic and difficult in dealing with the owner which has been a source of increasing stress for me. The current workload & having to work alone or limited support being asked to keep the shop open so it doesn’t lose money with casual staff being paid for the whole day but myself having lunches deducted, this have been addressed within the last 2 weeks & I’m now receiving the extra for lunch breaks not taken. There’s also the constant criticism of window displays being told to change this as the owner doesn’t value the work you have put in and not being able to make these decisions are impacting my ability to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Addressing these concerns have proved difficult in recent months and have only elevated my stress but also have made any contribution more difficult in performing more effectively.
I believe that a more autonomous approach to my work would not only improve my well-being but also enhance my productivity and contribution to the team. I am a committed leader who comes from a much larger portfolio & have expressed my concerns verbally but have been dismissed on multiple occasions with answers like I don’t have time for this calls being cut short and even being laughed at down the phone suggesting I was talking loudly as my tone didn’t suit my concerns. When addressing concerns about team members I am told to pick my battles so every concern is brushed under the table as not concerning. One particular team member has messaged me suggesting that a post on the work platform has pushed me over the edge this made me feel uncomfortable. In talking to my doctor he has decided that some time off & has offered medication to help me relieve some of this anxiety as this is needed in my recovery. Issue stem from the owner constantly calling the store with I’m just checking in & when I don’t answer the phone am questioned what am I doing. Store targets being increased without discussion. Public holidays being refused penalty rates being told we are a small business & only offer time owing. When going on annual leave not being paid correctly having to ask why I don’t have leave loading applied then told my salary is included where this is incorrect as per my agreement.
The business definitely has one rule for one & multiple for others.
The only thing that this environment has all the customers have been delightful.
Hence sales & store performance have been maintained due to my constant commitment.
