Pros

A lot of nice people who care a lot about mental health. The service Brightline is providing is an important one so knowing you are helping to create it feels good and is motivating.

Cons

More and more there is a contradiction between what the company and the CEO and leaders say and and what is actually done. I will give two examples. 1. We are told a lot that mental health is important and the company cares about us and we should take care of our mental health and the company is taking steps so people who are feeling burned out feel less burned out. At the same time the CEO has said at a general meeting that everyone should be working at least 45 hours a week minimum and that everyone who works at a startup should know that you can't just work a regular 40 hour work week. So which is it? Should we take care of our mental health to make sure we don't burn out or should we always be working overtime? 2. We are told diversity and inclusion is very important for the company and are told at meetings a lot about the work the DEI committee is doing. The CEO is a white woman and she talks a lot about how we've hired a lot of women. But very few people of color are getting hired especially in leadership positions. Someone asked at a general meeting why we only have one person of color in executive leadership. The answer was that they did consider a lot of non-white people for the last 3 executive positions that were recently filled but that in every single case the white person was obvi the best candidate. Really? I joined the company because I care about mental health a lot and I was excited to be part of something that made a difference in the world. I am still here and I haven't given up because I have hope that the company might change. But if I'm being real about it the culture at this company has gotten worse since I got here. I and a lot of other people are feeling lied to, disillusioned and burned out right now. But we have to act like we are excited and everything is perfect every day.

Pros

-unique focus on pediatric mental health and commercial demand -unlimited PTO -good compensation and benefits -good professional development and learning opportunities -great teammates (pre-layoffs and recent resignations)

Cons

***Poor leadership. Executive team is unable to clearly articulate goals and they frequently change course, causing confusion for everyone else. Tons of micromanagers. ***Too bureaucratic. The company hired too quickly for an early stage startup, resulting in too many layers and redundant roles. Really hard to get anything done without writing a decision memo, making a deck, getting resources from other teams, getting ELT sign off, etc. Too complicated for an early stage startup. ***Culture of burnout. Employees are consistently overworked, overwhelmed, and stressed out. Leadership has an old school mentality of working long hours to prove yourself. ***Poor cash management. The company fundraised a lot of money, which helped us grow. But it also created pressure and expectations to perform from investors, without enough time to mature the business model. Because of this the company had to recently lay off many workers (including therapists). This could have been avoided if the leadership team approached fundraising, growth and hiring more responsibly. ***Unfair treatment of minorities. I know of at least 3 people of color who left because they felt their managers were creating a hostile work environment and they were being discriminated against.

Pros

PTO Remote work from home Health Care Benefits 401 K Pediatric behavioral health

Cons

Brightline has been struggling for some time now with an unsustainable business model and it just seems to be getting worse and not better. Understandably, it is a difficult time to be a startup given the economic climate, however, management/leaderships' attempts to understand and resolve issues has been unsuccessful so far. Issues trickle down from the top and end up having the greatest negative impact on patient facing employees and patients/families. Brightline is misleading- it looks nice on the outside but the reality is unfortunately different. There are a few people in leadership/management who seem trustworthy and competent, but overall leaders/managers have bad communication, lack transparency, poor management skills, are inexperienced and inefficient, and continue to "miss the mark" on fundamental issues. As is often the case with rapid business growth, the burnout is real, culture/morale is low, and there is a shortage of cash to meet expansion costs. As a clinician, I do not stand by many of their business decisions to increase revenue & cut costs as these decisions are clinically unsound, unsustainable, and ultimately harm clinicians and patients. If you are considering a job at Brightline as a behavioral therapist, I would recommend you look elsewhere. The turnover is high across many departments and there are valid reasons for that.
