Pros

Nice building, generous annual leave

Cons

Toxic workplace, bullying and harassment common. People at senior management level have been protected by the organisation when serious breaches of bullying and (sexual) harassment occurred. Projects that receive colossal sums of money are not properly evaluated and advice to staff is often 'get the money out of the door'. Company is sympathetic to businesses with known track records exploitation (e.g. De Beers).

Pros

- Generous annual leave - Friendly and supportive peers - Potential for important and impactful work - Location is great

Cons

- Terrible communication within teams and between departments - Managers lack management skills - No acknowledgement of team members skills and experience - Highly administrative work with no room to take on additional projects - No career progression or development - High turnover with no acknowledgement of why - A complete lack of trust resulting in extreme micromanagement - Management can be coarse, controlling and pedantic - Changes to procedures or policy are generally frowned up by managers Overall a toxic environment. I would actively discourage anyone from working for the British Academy.

Pros

- Very generous annual leave (34 days, excluding Bank Holidays, plus office closed between Christmas and New Year) - Very generous end of salary pension scheme - Most of the staff are friendly and sociable. There are teams who have regular social activities, and all staff have a big Christmas Party, and a Summer Party. The Summer Showcase is also a big event, and staff are encouraged to attend outside of working a slot. - The staff all tend to have interesting and varied backgrounds and you will find yourself having strange but engaging conversations about different research areas/ideas for change. - The Fellows of the Academy are impressive and interesting, and (generally, though not always) friendly and encouraging. - The building is beautiful and many of the staff choose to go into the office. - Very flexible (depending on the team) re. working from home, and flexible hours where possible. - The work itself is important and you feel like you're contributing to representation of the subjects. - The researchers are great, and their research genuinely fascinating. - Internal movement between teams for growth and development is encouraged, which is not something always seen at organisations of this kind. - Internal progression within teams is encouraged (in some teams) where possible. - Public events plan is going to be 10/10

Cons

- Some teams are hierarchical, and the departments can be siloed with difficult inter-departmental working. - The pay is average at best, poor at worst, though is in constant review. - Some of the Staff/Fellow relations can be strained. - Progression past Manager level can be difficult, as opportunities don't come up often. - Still some way to go in terms of diversity.
