Pros

If you want an irritating place to travel to for work then it’s great. The car park has spaces. Floor staff are some of the best people.

Cons

The work is so incredibly simple and boring. It doesn’t require A Levels. There is absolutely no enjoyment in the place. Obsession with the barn is quite childish and negatively affects everything. No ventilation, and it’s insufficiently insulated. Insanely hot in summer, in winter too cold to actually carry out analytical work (often < 16°). Managers in their office get a fan. Managers and above are the least intelligent in the company. Their only talents are self-preservation, and pretending they care. Everyone above the floor employees is in on the entire con, and subsequently the only people that benefit from working here. The salaries? So incredibly low, they encourage no cross talk regarding salaries to hold back the tide. Can’t take the poser CEO seriously. Insincere to the point of nausea. Only a matter of time before the company is dead in the water.

Thank you for taking the time to review Broughton Laboratories. We are sorry to hear you found your work boring. Our aim is to support team members in pursuing a career they are passionate about, using the skills they demonstrate and understanding the areas of work they enjoy through personal development plans. Unfortunately, we have to disagree with your comment around an irritating place to travel. We are lucky to be based in a beautiful location just outside of Skipton, which following a recent survey conducted by Rightmove is the second happiest place to live in Great Britain. Our facility is set within the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, surrounded by meadow pastures and rivers. We offer plenty of free parking, a short walk to a bus route and a short journey to Skipton train station. We have fans, should we experience a week of particularly warm weather and heaters available should anyone need them. We would not hesitate to purchase more should they be requested. The building has air conditioning fitted within the laboratories. We are dedicated to providing a competitive salary in line with businesses of similar sizes and perform salary reviews on an annual basis. We are disappointed in your view of the management team. We encourage anyone that has any concerns to raise these at the time. If you would like to provide further feedback, please don’t hesitate to email me directly jcowgill@broughtonlaboratories.com

Pros

Good equipment Great location Willing to train graduates Able to talk to QA directly Good training

Cons

Little care for employee safety. Despite respirators being available and often required, nobody is trained to fit respirators. (This is a legal requirement) When fume hoods were externally tested, all but one failed, advice from management was to keep using them as it's better protection than nothing. Wage is just above minimum wage, although pay differs analyst to analyst, but is still drastically below industry average. No sick pay offered. Bonus is advertised but never given as thresholds are unrealistically high. The company changed hours of all analysts without consultation leading to worse working conditions than Amazon warehouses. 0830-1630 hours were changed to 12 hour shifts (reversing every two weeks, so 12 hours for six days with one day off). Sitting was not permitted, you were required to stand for the entire shift. I see in replies you state that there were 'regular votes' taken with regards to the shift pattern. This is incorrect there were two votes taken and both were ~50:50 meaning nobody was happy with the outcome. I worked with many capable and friendly colleagues but morale was through the floor and staff were leaving faster than they could recruit. This meant there was too much work for the team of mainly new starters. A known sensitising agent is one of the products being tested, it causes body/face rashes and difficulty breathing. Many employees have this reaction even when using PPE but nothing is done to protect them unless they are management, so can work remotely. Work is ongoing to implement an environmental monitoring program but nothing has changed since I started. The face and neck rashes were mentioned every month in my 1:1 with my line manager but nothing changed. Many staff have resigned because of this. I left my role on advice from my doctor.

Thank you for taking the time to review Broughton Laboratories. We are pleased you think the training provided is good and agree we are lucky to be based in such a lovely location. We identified there was a gap in our training for a respiratory face fitter and a team member was booked on the required training course, however due to the pandemic this was cancelled. Any face fitting requirements are currently being supported by a team member who works at an alternative site, who will attend and support when required. During the time the fume hoods failed, all activities being performed were reviewed. Any testing requiring a fume hood as a health and safety measure was tested in the hood that had passed the relevant maintenance checks. Any testing where the use of the fume hood was deemed a best practice rather than a requirement, the other hoods continued to be used as the work performed caused no health and safety concern. Further checks were performed, and replacement parts fitted as quickly as possible. We continue to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to improve health and safety throughout the laboratory. This also requires commitment from the team to follow the correct practices which are put in place. The full team have recently been retrained in the correct PPE and the strict guidelines for handling the identified product. A further review of additional ventilation/ extraction is currently being performed. All our existing health and safety practices comply with HSE legislation and are reviewed annually by our health and safety consultants. We are also working with an external team of environmental and occupational toxicologists to implement a robust evaluation of substances handled and the safety measures required to keep our team members safe. Our salaries are reviewed on an annual basis to ensure consistency across Broughton. As a small business we do not currently offer sick pay for short term absences, however we do have a policy in place which provides cover for accidents and illness, to provide financial security when you are unable to work for a period of time. We continue to review this on a regular basis. The company runs a discretionary bonus scheme which is dependent on the trading, financial performance and business goals in each financial year. A review of this year’s targets has been performed and a communication issued to provide updated targets for the remainder of 2021, which we believe is achievable for team members to qualify for a bonus. Due to the pandemic, we had to implement a shift pattern to minimise the amount of team members on site to ensure team member safety. Aside from voting options, the team were encouraged to provide suggestions in how the shift patterns could be improved. An additional paid break was encouraged for all team members to reflect the increase in hours worked. Although we understand this was a challenging time for all, feedback has shown that the team thought the measures we put in place were required to protect their own and colleague’s safety. We acknowledge the pandemic also impacted morale. We have recently been reintroducing our company events which we know the team enjoy, all whilst ensuring team safety. This has included charity events supporting the Mind – Mental Health Charity.

Pros

- Lots of parking available. - Nice surrounding enviroment of greenery and wildlife. - Good training structure in place. - Decent pension plans.

Cons

- Uncompetitive salary (10-20% lower then local scientific employers) - Morale in the scientific departments is incredibly low, most people are looking to leave - Staff turnover is higher than the company can replace and the few experienced staff left in the QC lab appear to be absolutely miserable and overwhelmed with stress. - A culture of stress and putting too much work on people is the norm. If you try to say you have too much work you get palmed off with "talk to your line manager", who will either do nothing or interrogate you as to why you can't do something. - The company falsely advertises a bonus scheme that they don't ever pay out. - Progression is extremely limited and reserved for desperatation. - A general feeling of abandonment at BLL when the company split into BLL/BNS. BLL had very little resource remaining and does not see any investment. - 1:1s are almost pointless and sometimes feel as if they are going to be used against you. I never saw any action from my issues raised.

Thank you for taking the time to review Broughton Laboratories. We are dedicated to providing a competitive salary and benefits package which we feel is in comparison to businesses of similar sizes. Due to the pandemic, we had to implement a shift pattern to minimise the amount of team members on site, to ensure team member safety and to follow the Government’s guidance. We appreciate this caused some challenges and we are very thankful the team adjusted their working pattern to ensure business continuity to our clients in the healthcare sector. We are very pleased that due to the lifting of restrictions we have been able to return as one team and have already noticed a significant improvement in team morale. The laboratory is a fast-moving environment to ensure the timely completion of analysis for pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors. In terms of culture of stress and too much work. We take these comments very seriously and it is not our policy to do nothing. If this was highlighted we would work with the team member to support them with any workload concerns. We continue to run a discretionary bonus scheme which is dependent on the trading, financial performance and business goals in each financial year. Full details of the operation of the scheme is detailed in our bonus scheme policy. All job vacancies are advertised to the team internally and when team members meet the criteria of the role and complete a successful interview, they have successfully progressed and thrive in their new roles. Two Scientists have recently progressed to Senior Scientist positions in the laboratory. All team members have an assigned line manager who they have regular contact with and who can support them. We are sorry you did not find your 1:1’s beneficial and wish you would have raised this at the time. The management and senior management team have an open-door policy for anyone who wishes to raise any questions or concerns. We also take the time to run people leader sessions to ensure a consistent approach to the 1:1 process across the business.
