Pros

If you live upstate NY it's one of the better companies to work at.

Cons

Its way too high school like. People who are there have worked there since high school and are now close to retirement. Too much gossip and clicks. Everyone is stuck on doing things the ancient way because nobody is up to par on computer programs!

Pros

Good salaries for the Hudson Valley Good 401k match Results oriented organization Friendliness and helpfulness of most employees It's very hard to get fired Very good wages if you're in the Union, lots of overtime Becomming more receptive in instituting positive change

Cons

Nepotism - Qualified employees and outside applicants are often passed up for friends and family from the outside with no utility background. This hurts the organization. Difficult to advance - If you are not liked (those who offer constructive criticism) - face hurdles for advancement. Benefits - Healthplan has gotten much wrose in recent years. No pension for recent hires. Upper management is completely disconnected from lower management and the Union. Issues and complaints seem to fall on deaf ears especially if your in the Union. Communication is poor. Some upper level organizational decisions are based on assumptions rather than facts and constructive input, and results are very counterproductive. Culture that has induced laziness and ineptitude in many. Company won't fire these people, and does not recognize the issue. Employees are mostly good people, but some in upper management cannot or will not communicate with their employees. Some management employees made to work 60 hour weeks while others barely put in 30. In many cases their is a large disparity in the dissemination of work, and bosses don't care. Big morale issues in some departments. Upper management only cares about the shareholders. 0-1% salary increases for most management employees in last 2 years. Department heads divide up the salary budget and decide how to distribute it among their management employees - more will just suck up to the boss instead of being productive. While many employees have/will work here for their entire career, with no more pension the newer younger talent in management will not hang around for very long. I know of many already looking outside the company. Storms are horribly managed

Bad place for an engineer

Pros

New employees can start with three weeks of vacation. The facilities are clean. The union contract is good until 2017.

Cons

The engineering staff is treated with little respect. Micromanagement is the norm. Mid level engineering management is not taken seriously and has no real power. Because of the high turnover rate there is little stability in the engineering organization.
