      Enjoyable Graduate Experience

      Pros

My supervisors have been excellent. They are responsive, available and interested in my development. To my mind, all large companies are essentially the same and completely dependent on the people which surround you.

      Cons

It's age distribution is surprisingly old for a technology company. They are taking immediate steps to remedy this with the graduate program. The company could also use more women, but this is a problem across the industry, particularly in more technical roles

      Used to be better

      Pros

10-15 years ago CSC was a great place to work. There are still many good people there. So long as you're doing billable work you're probably safe from the annual retrenchment rounds. Good online education/training resources (though you have to use them in your own time). If you make the effort you can establish relationships with motivated international colleagues some of whom are fabulous people.

      Cons

Too many to relate really - see many of the other negative reviews here since all the ones I've read seem accurate enough. Culture is rule-bound but the rules/procedures aren't useful or helpful. No pay rises for 4-5 years. Brain-dead/mean travel expense policy. Work styles and team management structures hopelessly out of date (waterfall IN, agile OUT (though lip-service paid to the name). Terrible client contracts written and teams have to dig CSC out of the situation so created and take the blame for failing to meet financial targets. Any innovation has to come from individuals on their own time, no support given to allow things to be run with. On and on I could go... Its decline as an employer of choice and as a valued partner to customers has been a gradual one but inexorable.

      Fun office, otherwise frustrating

      Nov 10, 2016 -

      Pros

The office culture is good and can be really good fun. Some great people to work with who are happy to share knowledge when they have time to do so. If you're in the "in" crowd, you'll be OK (for a while at least, until you're on the outer).

      Cons

Slow to replace staff when the quit. Often not replaced at all, blamed on not being able to "get approval". So many staff have quit to move on to much better jobs. Local management are either: * fantastic and overworked Or * completely unqualified and floundering but somehow safe from ramification. It's strange and toxic when you hear them blaming everyone but themselves. Good staff are overworked and not overly well appreciated. No access to superstar staff who could help junior/ new staff as they don't have time. Culture of panic has developed, caused by constant fire fighting and customer escalations. Sounds harsh, but it is true in my experience. Some managers are great at dealing with this, some are terrible.

OK as a place to work but there is so much better out there.

      Pros

Very flexible, although this may be more a reflection of being a large company and a sign of the times. People in middle management and in general are down to earth. Senior management is questionable.

      Cons

Majority of people stay because they have been there forever. There is a sense of dead wood in the company, although this improved in the last couple of years I was there. The company has traditionally had a round of redundancies each March and you never know if or when you may be tapped. As a result, several of us who are no longer there have really appreciated more positive workplace cultures. A lot of good people have left off their own accord because of the culture. At least this was the case 3 years ago, I hope things have improved somewhat but don’t think they have - I have a colleague who left there only 3 months ago and informed me the environment hadn’t changed.

Not enough investment in its people

      Pros

flexibility, people are nice, work life balance is good

      Cons

Company has been cost cutting for years and years. No budget for anything. Morale is low. Retrenchments are part of Business as Usual. Wages are unfair, not based on merit or promotion. Senior managers are completely out of touch with the people in the company and the CEO is only after his own interests in making the shareholders happy at a huge cost to the employees

Customer and personal success often required overcoming the corporate environment

Aug 31, 2012 - Solutions Architect in Canberra

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Infrastructure outsourcing (GIS) and resources/mining C&SI are big business. Strong experience and skills of technical teams who cover variety of consulting and development needs - largely through heroic endeavours.

      Cons

Lack of support for employees on complex projects. Project teams operate at arms length from management. Limited executive expertise in C&SI lifecycle - processes, trends, technologies, tools, project & quality planning, project delivery. Company strategy is customer intimacy, but executive effort is limted to immediate financial targets: maximising prices & rates of profit per engagement, plus minimising cost & risk in winning work, delivering projects and developing capability. C&SI trend is profitability at a decreasing scale, with dropping staff resource levels, scale & skill of IT specialities, customer satisfication, innovation, efficiency, competitiveness, business pipeline, aggregate return on capital. Major project failures have emerged.
