Pros

Working at CalEPA, in general, is very inspiring because of the wide range of interesting, cutting edge environmental science occurring - policy and practice. If you are interested in being on the regulatory side of science, that can be exciting and feel like you're working to make a real difference. Climate change, pollution laws, water rights, environmental justice, human health - it all matters here and my co-workers (mostly) really want to make a positive difference. Massive retirement revving up over next few years so great time to join if you want to make it a career and advance. Big push to diversify workforce and build inclusive work culture.

Cons

It is bureaucratic. Decisions can take a long time to be made. You can work on projects for years and then policy changes and the project suddenly ends without warning. Funding is tight. Old time employees taking up desk space and not contributing - waiting to retire. Like other comment - if you work well, you get more work, while other people appear to do little.

Pros

- Close places to eat, cafeteria and gym in building. - Depending on the unit you're in, you may end up with management that supports you and is flexible.

Cons

- Bullying and harassment are performed by upper management regularly resulting in high turnover. The practice of this is widely known by the department but nothing is done. - Bad management results in no upward mobility, no flexibility in schedule and unfair treatment between employees. - Newer employees are powerless when being picked on because entire management allows it. Cannot complain up the management chain because they allow it. Specific units have a very bad reputation and multiple complaints on them. But the department does nothing. - Constant change in direction and new employees due to poor management. - No support for employees requesting assistance. Management looks down on them and drives them out of the department.

Pros

Cafeteria- Cash Only Easy to get to by train Parking is expensive if you're not a student Flexible schedule for students Great first office job to break in newbies if you get the right manager "Diverse" I guess Great Ideas: (That won't be put to use) Occasional new employee activity party with snacks and socials

Cons

Tedious work: Prepare to work on projects filing closets and then refiling them under new management No Benefits Micromanaging Lack of cross training puts additional work on key employees Meetings for meetings Nepotism in the ranks High Turnover Selective Lack of communication: They choose who to inform and let others fall through the cracks Abandons older tenured workers If you're a soft cookie stay away.
