Fine if you're a white, male graduate engineer

Pros

There are some great individual people and some inspiring ideas.

Cons

No discernible career development beyond graduate status with projects seemingly being assigned based on sector lead favouritism rather than competence and development requests frequently declined. People are rewarded for spending extra time on projects and penalised if they have dependants outside of work. There is no line management or structured supervision/accountability.

Thanks for your feedback. We're sorry to hear this was your experience - it's really not the experience we want for any of our employee-owners. It'd be helpful for us to understand more about what you've told us - if you're able to get in touch using glassdoor@cambridge-design.com we'd appreciate the chance to learn more.

Dysfunctional to say the least...

Pros

The staff (engineers, researchers, designers) are truly great people, everyone is so welcoming, easy to talk to and friendly. They are the ones who keep this place running amongst the chaos. The flexi-time hours are good and people are left to explore and manage their own projects. There is a relaxed and casual working style.

Cons

There are a lot of frustrated people here due to the senior partners who are unable to manage this company. The lack of communication, any sort of strategy or plan is beyond me. There is not whatsoever a "career development plan" and the offices are disgusting and dirty. Pay rises are virtually non-existent and they use the term "intensive working" for when trying to encourage people to work overtime for free.

Good team, with sometimes questionable management

Pros

* Friendly cohesive company - mixing of all employees was at the forefront of management's mind. They tried hard to maintain communication between the various disciplines and project teams. * Opportunity to work on a wide variety of different projects (as long as you don't get yourself typecast) * Generous Pension

Cons

* Management style was "the founders word is not to be questioned", even to the point of some employees being fired for technical disagreements with partners. Since my time the ownership structure has changed, but from contact with friends still there, I've heard that the founders have stacked the management board so that they are still in de-facto control of the business. * Happy to take ethically dubious projects - some employees were asked to work on projects or for clients that they found distasteful. * There is an attitude from management that they're doing you a favour by employing you, and they have got offended in the past by people asking for better working conditions or leaving.
