Pros

You get to work with interesting people on interesting projects, often alongside reputable authors, photographers, cartographers, explorers, educators, and scientists. Meet a lot of really cool people, see the behind-the-scenes of museums and national establishments, attend many special events, and do some pretty neat things. Good benefit program. Most CG employees are the hardest workers and multitaskers you will ever meet. Many past employees have gone on to do amazing things in their careers. Awesome location! You will never tire of the unobstructed view of the Ottawa River.

Cons

Very, very top-heavy. CG is published by a non-profit, and you’re expected to regularly perform work tasks or volunteer at after-work events for it. Workload is heavy, fast, and unrelenting — but not for a select few. This is not a new problem, and despite years of complaints to management and losing many longtime employees, things remain the same. CEO cares a lot (too much) about appearances, on all fronts. It’s one thing to decorate the office; it’s another to pay for commissioned artwork while underpaying employees and announcing cutbacks. Location is cool but the offices on the lower levels are in a converted 1830s flour mill, on the river. It’s cold and prone to spring flooding.

Really have to pry to find relevant work for you to complete.
