Pros

The pros are a shell game. You got unlimited PTO? They won’t let you take it and it’s just a benefit to the company so they can pay you off without paying out any accrued time. That’s literally why they have it.

Cons

ADVICE: If you’re being acquired by this company, start interviewing and quit before the ink dries. They grow through acquisition. Non-organic pump-and-dump kind of stuff. The average employee age is quite young because when they buy a company, they take the people who have built it for a decade or more and eliminate them within 6 months, after they have drained them of their knowledge (but not of their skill and experience). They decide based on the balance sheet, not based on performance. All they are doing when you meet with the top brass at Carnegie in your first weeks is evaluating whether the brand can survive by replacing you with someone in their 20s getting paid half. They do it over and over. Low diversity, low experience, poor tech stack, no training, no empathy — just finding ways to do less work, cheaper. The worst version of private equity backing.

Thank you for sharing your perspective and for your honest feedback. We are truly sorry to hear that your experience with Carnegie’s acquisition process has been so negative and frustrating. We understand your concerns about job security, the value of experienced employees, and the sentiment that our growth is not organic. We take your feedback seriously and are committed to re-evaluating our approach to acquisitions and how we integrate new teams. It is never our intention to make anyone feel disposable or that their knowledge is being "drained." We believe that the people who built these companies are invaluable. We are dedicated to ensuring a smooth process for acquired teams. We know that change can be difficult, and we work hard with our communication and support for all employees during these transitions. Pros

Unlimited PTO but we get scolded if we take too much.

Cons

Where do I even start? All of the recent 1- and 2-star reviews are 100% spot on. This place is so chaotic and dysfunctional that it truly boggles the mind. Extremely top-heavy org structure with incompetent, inexperienced, and cliquey upper management. A culture of favoritism where some people get promoted repeatedly and others languish as perpetual individual contributors. Little to no diversity org-wide but especially in leadership positions — visit our website to see for yourself. Constant acquisitions without any meaningful effort to integrate the new companies into our structure and workflow. Incessant reorgs and restructures that throw our teams into tailspins, especially in client management. The amount of change is dizzying and exhausting and we are gaslit or accused of not being team players when we rightly complain. To top all of this off, we are paid well below market rate and everyone knows it but the company doesn’t seem to have any intention of changing it. Raises are laughable and are effectively reductions in the context of inflation. To boot, our workloads are absolutely outrageous. We are working far beyond our contracted hours and keep sounding the burnout alarm but it falls on deaf ears. There is 0 transparency with resourcing and we all seem to continue accumulating accounts with no end in sight. Lastly, there have been several rounds of layoffs over the past year, each of which has been handled extremely callously. The lack of dignity and respect shown to us is so shameful. Every person I have spoken to here is struggling in one way or another. People regularly set their Slack statuses to “drowning” or “overwhelmed” or “SOS” and management doesn’t blink an eye. Please don’t bother applying here. I have no faith that our leadership will ever accept responsibility for the mess they’ve created. Whatever pads the pockets of our private equity investors, I guess.

Thank you for your candid feedback. We take all employee reviews seriously, and we are concerned to hear that you and your colleagues are having such a difficult experience. We're sorry to hear that you feel unheard and unsupported. Your detailed comments highlight some serious issues, and we want you to know that we are taking them to heart. Acquisitions and reorganizations can be disruptive. Our intention is to grow and strengthen the company. Carnegie is actively working to improve how we integrate new teams and manage change to minimize the impact on our employees. The issues you raised about management, compensation, workload, and the handling of layoffs are particularly troubling. We are committed to fostering a culture of transparency, fairness, and respect. We are currently reviewing training programs and compensation structure to ensure they are competitive and equitable. The "People First" mantra is one we stand by. Carnegie is committed to making meaningful improvements. We value every one of our employees and are dedicated to creating a supportive and sustainable work environment for all. Pros

Remote work environment Unlimited PTO if you have the bandwidth and manager who supports work/life balance Colleagues are amazing but clearly under water and stressed. Morale is low even amongst those with long tenure

Cons

What happens when a company touting their “people first” ethos sells out to private equity? The slow death of what made Carnegie a great place to work. In the past I was happy to recommend open positions to my network as Carnegie felt like a rare gem in the agency landscape, but today I would not share an open role with anyone. The openings are there because talented people are fleeing the high-stress/low stability work environment or are dismissed from the company with little compassion or explanation. One day they’re a green bubble on slack, and the next they’re like a ghost who you’re not allowed to ask about. Every day a new team member departure is announced and that, coupled with steadily dropping morale in the last ~10 months from constant restructures and lack of basic human empathy, leads to a workplace where cheer feels forced. Company “events” feel like mandatory places where you need to show how much you love it here even if the reality of your day is far from the “people first” workplace they talk about. Even if you are insulated in a smaller team or with good direct managers, the constant restructures and firings lead to a lot of stress and feeling like the company is spinning its wheels. It’s demoralizing point blank. As other reviews have alluded to, it feels like the same 10 people constantly get promoted to new roles while others are passed over. As Carnegie acquires new companies it also frequently fires their leadership after a few months once they wring out any industry good will or novel approaches - taking what they’ve built over years and discarding them like used batteries who have been sucked dry. The writing is on the wall that Carnegie cares more for its profits and benefiting the private equity firm than taking care of its employees. A place that once felt like a breath of fresh air now has the corporate stink.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a candid and detailed perspective. It is painful to hear that the rare gem feeling you once associated with Carnegie has diminished. We value the dedication of our long-term employees and appreciate your honesty regarding the impact of our recent transitions and restructuring. Moving into a new chapter of growth often brings growing pains. We take your comments about transparency and the forced nature of morale very seriously. It is never our intent for “people first” to feel like a hollow phrase. We are committed to looking closely at our internal communication and how we support our teams during these changes. Please reach out to me directly at hr@carnegiehighered.com with any questions or comments.
