Pros

Good office location, decent CEO and pension plans.

Cons

Perfect environment for someone looking to be micromanaged, enjoys blame culture and aggressive tactics to ensure you burnout. Someone who wants to work with software so old it doesn’t load on to a web browser at full screen yet is told to leverage AI and be proactive in finding news ways to be productive, yet is shut down at any suggestion of doing that isn’t according to the exact process guide. If you aren’t that ambitious and want to work somewhere that it is certain you have nowhere to move up, this role could suit and helps if you don’t mind being severely underpaid. The recent FCA scandal shows Close is on trajectory for a sinking ship and this is reflected in the pay and culture as management struggle to manage the damage to reputation and financial performance.

Pros

- depends on the team, but generally you can have a pretty good WLB (that may change with all the redundancy and restructuring happening right now) unless you are in the wrong team - I’ve worked with some of the most competent and talented people in all my professional life - benefits are pretty decent overall with them matching up to 10% pension - you can have a lot of opportunities to shine (doesn’t mean you’ll get rewarded for that though) - I’ve picked up quite some new skills on the job which can be useful for career development

Cons

- career wise: had to leave because I felt I had hit my ceiling here or I was just not good enough at my job or I was just on the wrong team especially when I could see people around me getting promoted - weird organizational structures with a basically non existent overarching central function, so different teams from different offices who do essentially the same things can have different practices - at times I felt like getting some people to do their job was harder than getting blood out of a stone - very non competitive salary - look at the share price… the downfall was partly due to the motor finance shenanigans (although why only Close Brothers is the only lender with the most significant exposure is also not excusable) but also because of a number of serious senior management mistakes - over the past few years I’ve seen a few newly acquired businesses make huge losses and being wound down
