Pros

You meet some good people (but if they are nice or smart they will not stick around for very long).

Cons

Terrible ethics. The business model is to cheat clients: All revenues come from outranking partner shops on Google branded searches (i.e. Zalando Coupons) and then taking a commission for bringing them the sales they would have had anyway. Or expensive onsite display placements which drive no sales and no one sees (salesmen laugh about "selling air"). Meetings are full of jokes about how dumb customers are for trusting us. Don't even think about adding value... it's a spamming and scamming business. Nobody has passion for the product. It's coupons... Long working hours for low salaries. Forget about getting equity. Unknown and unrespected by other Rocket Ventures, so don't count on a later career jump into a venture you want. Management strategy swings wildly. They fire whole teams abruptly. No effort is made to train or motivate. Extremely high churn. HR is dishonest, they have no problem sending a job offer and retracting it before the employee starts. They prefer to hire an army of interns, pay them too little to live in Munich, trick them with long term career prospects, and get rid of them at the end of their 6 months. Not a startup, no common mission. Full of internal divisions, departmental paranoia, and politically motivated processes. You will never be able to tell your family and friends what you do without being embarrassed. It's coupons...

CupoNation Response

Dear Reader, I am the Head of HR of CUPONATION and as the Co-Founders and myself were extremely surprised about this negative evaluation, we would like to take the chance to clarify some things for you. We do know where this evaluation is coming from and it clearly is a frustrated reaction to the fact that the company had decided to let this former employee go due to performance issues. I would like to comment some statements in this evaluation: • “Terrible ethics. The business model is to cheat clients: All revenues come from outranking partner shops on Google branded searches (i.e. Zalando Coupons) and then taking a commission for bringing them the sales they would have had anyway” We are sorry to hear that the writer has not understood our business model, although he was a part of CUPONATION for the past 4 months and assumed a leadership role. • …..so don't count on a later career jump into a venture you want. We have a lot of cases where employees (long term and short term) are now working at other Rocket ventures or other startups/companies, have perused high level roles and followed a tremendous career paths after learning and developing at CUPONATION. Many of our full time employees and managers started their careers as interns at CUPONATION. Development opportunities are numerous, both horizontally and vertically. Young people are given the opportunity to learn and experience new things and to gather valuable work experience to kick-start their career both internally and externally. CupoNation embraces promoting students and young talents and helps them with developing their strengths and acquiring useful skills for the job market. • They prefer to hire an army of interns, pay them too little to live in Munich, Yes, we do have a couple of interns but, in total, they make less than 35 % of our total employees. Also, they are paid much higher salaries than in other startups and as already pointed out in my previous comment, we endeavor to keep our interns as full-time employees after their internships, if it is good fit for both sides. • It is all the worst bits of Rocket Internet…… The writer has never worked for another Rocket Venture, so he has no authority to judge whether CUPONATION is the “worst bits”. The writer is a young person who was not prepared for working in a very performance driven company like CUPONATION, even though this had been made clear to him during the entire recruitment process and also within the last 4 month he was working for us. A lot of employees have already approached me and are shocked about his comments because they are rendering a completely false image of our company, our culture and the values of our employees. Therefore, please carefully read all the other comments which have been placed above and below. CUPONATION is a great employer with a huge potential to become excellent and the founders and I are working hard for that goal and for providing challenging and exciting tasks, a cool atmosphere and also possibilities to grow fast and develop yourself. These are exactly the reasons why a lot of employees and also former co-workers are very fond of our company and if you would like to have proof about it, please do not hesitate to give any of us a call to speak about it in person. Thanks a lot and have a great day! Rico Fernando Head of Human Resources

Pros

At the beginning of my time in CN, I must say that it was awesome, we had so much fun in the company, it was truly the spirit of a startup. Flexible work schedule (depending on your team's needs and boss), great responsibilities, nice office, OK-ish equipment (PC, mouse, keyboard, etc.), lots of learnings and skills development, super international colleagues that can easily become friends, plenty of events and parties (not necessarily organized by the management).

Cons

Sometimes the management seem to have a blurry idea of where they are going as a company, or what are the needs (in terms of people) to drive the company to its objective, therefore they hire people for this team or this other, and then their plans change so the employees are laid off or even worse, they are switched to other positions where the person has nothing to do or is not interested in.

Pros

+ you may get some experience and empowerment at young age, but don't expect any serious career growth - for that you will need to change companies + very international and young team, but a lot of good people leave within 1,5-2 years and rightfully so

Cons

- long hours / high pressure / low pay (only ok for as entry-level jobs) - chaotic, lack of company vision: one quarter they may go full throthle and hire 20 people; next quarter several departments undergo layoffs due to cost-cutting - MD's favor and promote their incompetent "buddies" (even in key positions) over qualified professionals; many are unhappy and leave. This results in inefficiencies and high risks to the company. Seems like MD's have been outgrown by the company; lack maturity and competence to run a company of this size - Despite youthful bravado top management treat employees (and clients, and partners, etc.) like dispensables; sometimes they are downright disrespectful and unprofessional
