Toxic environment after management change ruined my experience
Pros
If you don’t care too much about the company or the customer, you can get away with not doing real work… CEO and COO have no clue what is happening in their own company.
Cons
My boss got fired a few months after he hired me. A few months later they let me go. But that wasn’t the worst part. I took the job because it was a great fit. When my boss interviewed me, he started the call by telling me this wasn’t about my qualifications. He said I had the experience and was qualified. This was to see if our personalities would mesh. The call was productive and fun. We got along, had some laughs, and shared the same views on how to win. As I was planning my first work trip, I got an unexpected call from our COO. She tells me he let my boss go, no real explanation. And she seemed very upbeat about it. But the energy was sucked out of the place. It went from positive and collaborative to a fear based toxic environment. I realized later the toxicity was always there, but he was shielding us from it. So now I was fully exposed. Dream job when I signed up. Absolute hell when he was gone. The worst part wasn’t losing my job. It was what the job became when we lost a real leader.
