Pros

Good money when school is in session. Possible overtime when school is in session. If you're high up in seniority, around 70 or above, out of 150 people, you get a pretty nice weekly schedule, and aren't required to have oncalls.

Cons

When you're new you get a terrible schedule and two on-calls a week. They are the worst. When school is out of session your hours drop, you can't have more than 15 hours in your schedule. Five to ten of those hours will be an on call and you only get full pay if you get called in. Cyride fights you in unemployment over the summer. When covid hit the head of cyride sent out papers for everyone to sign asking if they could survive with less hours. Everyone wanted to be helpful, so a lot of people said they could maybe lose a few hours, and those that did, didn't receive any unemployment. Pretty sure they used it as a defense for them not needing more money. Those who said they couldn't lose any hours got unemployment. Cyride still hacked everyone's hours when covid hit. Despite the fact they get a lump sum of money from contracts at the start of the year to pay us all for the whole year. We all lost hours and we didn't have to. They could've paid us just fine. Some of us went from 39 hours to 20. Some of us went from 39 to 0. But they cut everyone's hours, not because they didn't have the money, but because they saw an opportunity to capitalize on a pandemic and save money for themselves. Apply for cyride because it's a good job in the sense that it pays well and you get to choose what hours you work. Just don't fall for their frequent "we're in this together nonsense " it's just a job and a lot of people working here kill themselves going the extra mile, as if cyride is also going the extra mile for us. They aren't. Anyway, overall you can't survive in the summer easily here. Which doesn't matter if you're a student and want to head home for the summer, cyride will let you do that.

Pros

I'm writing these pros and cons from the perspective of an ISU student who worked here part time (that detail is important). - They will bend over backwards to make sure your work schedule fits your class schedule. This includes finals week - Pays better than other student jobs (food service, retail, etc.) - Retirement benefit (IPERS) - Drivers themselves are good people. You can trust most of them to be there for you whether it's friendly conversation on breaks or advice about the job.

Cons

- The union wasn't interested in helping the part time drivers (i.e. you), if something ever happens to you at work you're going to be on your own. - Full benefits are reserved for full time employees. - There's a hard limit on how many full time drivers they will employ. When one does open up it's offered to the most senior part timer and (rarely) goes down the list until someone accepts. - Seniority was calculated by hours worked so you can actually get lapped by other drivers who start months after you if they're able to regularly squeeze in a few more hours a week than you. - Pay is not competitive with other CDL jobs, if you start working here and want to continue doing driving work you can make more elsewhere. - While you will like most of the people here there's more than one dispatcher you'll find to be "abrasive" which is unfortunate because you need to be able to count on all your dispatchers.

Not competitive pay at all

Pros

*decent starting wage, but losing ground as other companies raise their wages at a faster rate than CyRide does. *You get to choose your schedule, but it is based on seniority, so if you're new you might not get much choice *They will pay out vacation time when you leave

Cons

*Pay is losing competitiveness - especially because many lower paying companies offer benefits and CyRide does not. Try paying $700+ per month in health insurance and see how far their pay will get you... hint, it takes you down $5+ per hour in pay to compensate for no benefits. *NO BENEFITS for employees working 39 hours per week. Only so many full-time slots and you'll never get one. (yes, there is vacation time, but it accrues slowly and is hard to take time off) *Works well as a part-time job *Other transit companies offer the same hourly wage, but they offer benefits and they don't limit their full-time employees to 24 *Supervisors are terrible *They hire dispatchers to fill ethnic and diversity check-boxes instead of on merit *Upper management and the City both look down on drivers
