Pros
I'm writing these pros and cons from the perspective of an ISU student who worked here part time (that detail is important). - They will bend over backwards to make sure your work schedule fits your class schedule. This includes finals week - Pays better than other student jobs (food service, retail, etc.) - Retirement benefit (IPERS) - Drivers themselves are good people. You can trust most of them to be there for you whether it's friendly conversation on breaks or advice about the job.
Cons
- The union wasn't interested in helping the part time drivers (i.e. you), if something ever happens to you at work you're going to be on your own. - Full benefits are reserved for full time employees. - There's a hard limit on how many full time drivers they will employ. When one does open up it's offered to the most senior part timer and (rarely) goes down the list until someone accepts. - Seniority was calculated by hours worked so you can actually get lapped by other drivers who start months after you if they're able to regularly squeeze in a few more hours a week than you. - Pay is not competitive with other CDL jobs, if you start working here and want to continue doing driving work you can make more elsewhere. - While you will like most of the people here there's more than one dispatcher you'll find to be "abrasive" which is unfortunate because you need to be able to count on all your dispatchers.
