A great place to work - if you no longer want to grow your career

Pros

There are some excellent benefits to working at Cyan, two weeks off over Christmas, Friday afternoons off in the summer time, and generally the CEO is very accommodating if you need to work from home or leave the office for appointments or errands. If you are happy with just working 9-5 on the same thing, day in and day out, then this is a great company to work for. You'll get great benefits, work with nice people, in a great location, and I'm sure you'll be very satisfied.

Cons

The work at Cyan is not very cutting edge, a lot of doing the same work over and over again, just rebranding for different clients. The CEO has little to no real passion for the industry and is only concerned about how profitable each job is. There is no push or support from above to grow your own skills, try something new, or try and stay on top of current trends. From time to time employees will get hired who have their own personal drive and introduce new ideas and techniques, but these employees never stick around very long and if it's easy for the old status quo to take over again. The CEO also likes to low ball salary negotiations, meaning that most decent talent don't make it past the negotiation phase, as either the CEO is unwilling to pay their expected salary, or they are turned off by the initial low ball offer that they just decline any job offer made to them. This results in most hires being either people fresh from school with little real agency experience and skills, or those from the bottom of the barrel who, regardless of experience, are truly worth such a low paycheque. Management is also really hung up on time sheets and you'll get grilled constantly to not only submit them on a daily basis (with penalties being given to those who do not) and you'll regularly be asked to justify the time you spent on tasks. There is little to no support for when a task goes over the budgeted time and it's a lot easier to just fudge your time sheets to fit the expected times than it is to either get support for going over or to justify why you did. Because of these two issues, this company has a really hard time holding onto staff that want to push this company beyond what is currently is. I don't see Cyan Solutions ever progressing past the company that it is today, which is probably why it's a good company to work for if you also have no need to progress past where you currently are in your career.

Pros

This is a company that truly cares about the people. Those working here and those they serve. This is not a sweat shop (although like anywhere, things can be crazy at times), life balance is where it's at here. Friday afternoons off in the summer. They close down for Christmas holidays Freedom to truly create your own role and implement ideas to carve out your position within the company. In China Town so surrounded by great food. vintage building, which most of us think it is pretty cool

Cons

It's small. currently 10 to 12 people which means your roles can expand to be support in many areas. If you are dreaming of a shiny/public career in the Marketing industry, this may be a good stepping stone. This is a more of a behind the scenes, people come first, quality work....less of a "look at me" Parking is limited so walking/bus/riding to work is optimal Vintage building (firehall) which means it's got hot spots and cold spots.

Pros

Management team is pretty laid back, informal, and casual; it's not usual a high stress environment. Best to remain flexible and open-minded as changes can can happen regularly. Clients are easy to deal with for the most part and work-life balance is generally strong. Location is good. Creative staff have good internal relationships with each other.

Cons

Because the team is so small, any personality conflicts can affect the entire staff. Limited on-site parking. No benefits but that's probably to be expected from a small agency. Agency going through some growing pains.
