Pros

Salaries and benefits are great compared to other government jobs in DC. Independent board. No political appointees. DC Water has a great reputation in the water/wastewater sector thanks to efficient, innovative operations and a highly-visible CEO. Customers generally appreciative even though rates are rising. Employees do good work to benefit the public. Generally a good place to work if you have a family.

Cons

Some senior managers have been around a long time and are experts in their fields, helping develop people's careers and improving the state of the industry. Other senior managers have simply been around a long time. Labor/management relations are tenuous. Most administration jobs are at Blue Plains, which can be malodorous and is hard to reach by public transit. This will change in the next 2 years when a new headquarters comes online near the baseball stadium.

Pros

Salary and benefits. Only thing that kept me there for as long as I did.

Cons

Without a doubt, the worst job I have ever had in my entire life. I was miserable every single day. Leadership is condescending and dismissive. They truly make a concerted effort to show you the lack of value they have for you. They will never consider your ideas or suggestions. You should expect to work in an environment with antiquated an outdated processes. It does not need to be a difficult job, however, there is zero training because no one knows how to do anything. Leadership insist on making things entirely more complicated than necessary. Even with an impressive salary, I would not return to DC Water if they doubled it.

Pros

They're always getting sued so there's plenty of work to do in litigation. The prices gouge the poor and rich residents of the District so you'll always get a paycheck.

Cons

DC Water has a very toxic environment. They promote the incompetent and harass and/or fire the competent workers. It's a do-as-I-say culture and they penalize employees for coming up with new ideas or thinking outside of the box. If you want a good government position where you can be incompetent and get promoted, then DC Water is the place for you.
