Pros

-The research done is good -The DZNE tries to involve early career researchers in the institute-wide meetings by giving them preferential treatment in the Q&As -The library is quite supportive

Cons

-There is a strong hierarchy and a toxic working environment (e.g. insults from supervisors) in many of the groups. -In my group, you are thrown into the deep and you better learn how to swim by yourself or drown. -When there is a conflict with a supervisor, the DZNE provides no support. Complaints from multiple people are not handled well or at all. There is no assistance in trying to reduce toxicity or help people in vulnerable, dependent positions (e.g. PhDs, master students). - One of the main advantages of science is traveling to conferences, meetings and other groups. It is made near impossible to go to scientific conferences (incredibly hard to get the money back, you are not allowed to stay at a location for longer than 5 days, even if you take days off, have to file a multitude of forms before and after if you want to have any hope of getting your money back)

Pros

Core facilities are very good. There is a lot of resources to do experiments.

Cons

1) The programs in place to support graduate students and postdocs are abysmal/non-existent. The place exists to support the careers of people at the top: the higher up you are, the more DZNE supports you. There is very much a paper-over-person mentality at this research institute. 2) The new building is very annoying to work in: doors break down constantly; fob access denies you from entering places you have access to. The building is built in a very illogical way: sometimes, you have to secure access 3-4 doors just to get to a microscope. 3) There are general structural/department-level issues with several of the departments: -The IT department is incompetent and very slow. -The purchasing department often very slow at fulfilling orders or cancels an order and doesn’t communicate back to the scientist why the order was cancelled. -HR - travel reimbursement takes 2-3x as long as at most other research institutes. 4) Administrative issues. There’s no way to follow up with people when something goes wrong and those leading the institution/the various departments don’t take responsibility when something bad happens. As a result, there’s no path forward for fixing the problems that exist, so people keep them to themselves, and this leads to a negative work environment.
