Pros

DCC is a nonprofit org in mental health sector. It has been there for over half century with a solid foundation built by previous executive teams and board. The office is located in downtown, so the transportation is convenient. The benefits are good (but employees have to pay 50%).

Cons

DCC’s wages (salaries) for frontline workers are competitive within the market, but the market rates themselves are low. The wages for non-frontline positions are even lower. The employee turnover rate is high for both frontline and non-frontline staff. The management team is dysfunctional. While DCC’s core values emphasize preventing mental crises and suicide, many employees, particularly those in management, appear to be very depressed, tired, numb, and down. Although management emphasizes “care” for people, this care is more often discussed in meetings than translated into monetary or other tangible support for employees.

Growing too quickly, beware

Pros

Fulfilling work, free food, supportive co-workers, growth opportunities, respected organization to gain experience to work elsewhere in the field or to apply for grad school, diversity is prioritized

Cons

Disorganized management, high and unclear expectations, constant changes with little to no documentation to keep track, punitive and micromanaging culture, toxicity, broken communication pathways, outdated training or sometimes no training, incompetent HR, frustrating tech issues, little follow through. Constantly having more things added to your plate and being punished if you miss anything. High staff turnover makes these issues worse over time, even seasoned staff are struggling.

Leadership has issues

Pros

Meaningful work, kind front line staff, 24 hr snacks and coffee

Cons

The frontline and team lead staff care a lot about the clients and the organization but directors seems way off base. they say they care about staff but dont dedicate enough time to supporting us through these hard jobs. The front line work is hard but rewarding... but it's difficult to feel valued and supported by anyone other than my coworkers. they keep adding more and more programs and projects but we are all emotionally drained and just want to help people, it's not a business its a support service.
