Pros
Nice people, relaxed and laid back job. Early finish on Friday.
Cons
The pay could be a little better
Pros
This company seems to hire nice people for the sales floor. I assume this is by chance, but most of the people I worked with up to the regional manager were very nice people and fun to work with. I am lucky that I got such a good group of people, who made the experience more tolerable
Cons
This company has poor management with little to no consideration for its employees. As per most companies, the employees will always be naturally squeezed so that the company can extract as much labor from them as possible for the time that they are there. This company takes that to another level. As this is a Dollar store, there were two main jobs that employees on the floor would have to complete; manning the registers, and stocking the floor. There are other jobs that should be on this list as well such as cleaning, but some things must take priority when you have limited time. Every week we would get on average 10 pallets of stock. This number would go up and down from week to week. To make profits, the company buys stock in bulk for cheap and then sells it. Therefore the company always has a lot of pallets. In the store, there was a large push to unstack as many pallets as possible. At first, I thought this is just because they want to maximize productivity, but I later found out it is because they have little room to store stock at the warehouse. Our store room could hold usually 4 with a maximum of 5 pallets at a time. This meant that every 3-4 days or so, the entire storeroom would have to be empty for a new load to be delivered. With 2-3 people working most days and all working hours being devoted to unloading pallets and register duties, there was not much time for anything else. Because we had so much stock coming in, we had to stack the shelves with stock, leaving no gaps and in some cases, overlapping products as we ran out of room. Stock was stacked on top of the shelves as it is meant to be, but most of these were full as not all stock could be put onto the shelves. The regional manager, although nice and funny, struggled to see how we could not make the shelves look nice and keep stock off the floor, etc. They devoted days to cleaning up the store which made it more presentable. I assume they thought we were lazy for not doing it as they did it in a couple of days, however, they could get this done because their sole job was to do that and we also had the usual 3 other people doing the other duties. At this store, we did not have a manager for a while which made organizing stock, rosters and other managing duties fall onto the supervisor. The supervisor would do these duties without any more compensation. This supervisor also had other commitments outside of work that they had to devote a lot of time to and the company knew about this. The supervisor felt it was their responsibility to run the place so they stayed back after work to try and complete pallets without clocking on for fear of being harassed by management about staying later than they should (which had happened before). The supervisor needed to stay back later in order to complete the pallets otherwise they would not have enough time to do it before the next truckload came. I don't know but I assume management knew about this supervisor staying late, as they had cameras and chose to say nothing about it which wouldn't be out of character for them. The store had a number of security cameras that could be accessed remotely by upper management. This created a big brother effect where at any time they could be watching you, making sure you are working. The cameras had little use as security and more as monitoring of staff. In the under two years I was there, we mopped the floor once (and not the entire floor). The floor being mopped was done as an employee convinced the regional manager that it needed to be done. This person proceeded to start mopping the floor with signs that said wet floor etc. Upper management saw this and contacted the regional manager telling them that they were blocking the entrance (with signs) and that we weren't allowed to mop during opening hours. This is baffling as only the supervisor has an extra 15 minutes on either side of opening hours which are meant for opening and closing the store. So therefore the floor was never mopped. The main takeaway from this is that upper and even lower management doesn't care. Although lower management has every right to, they don't say anything for fear of their jobs. This company does not promote feedback of any kind and more of a shut up and deal with it.
