Pros

The mission statement has good intentions and there are many women who DFS has helped get back on their feet.

Cons

Everything besides the mission statement. Management is absolutely atrocious in Manhattan, aka Headquarters, aka where they are supposed to be embodying the mission statement the most and lifting up the affiliates to follow, but they only degrade their employees morale, are not inclusive or empowering (yes, I mean you, queer and minority groups), and there are no repercussions when reporting these violations to HR - in fact, HR is a major part of the problem and there is retaliation for speaking up. Incredibly unprofessional and stifling environment. No chance for advancement and you work in fear of losing your job or being targeted if you step out of line with your ideas. And don't even get me started on the pay - some employees qualifying for food stamps while the CEO makes almost a half a million a year. Shameful. If I could give it less than 1 star I would. I highly do not recommend applying here until some major reform takes place within management. Have lunch with a few employees before accepting a position to see how it really is.

Thank you for your feedback. We are fortunate to have a diverse group of men and women here who are passionate about our mission and vision. It is certainly unfortunate that you seem to have experienced something negative or some type of misunderstanding. The people we have working here understand that we collaborate so we can all use our talents to be empowering and empower the women we serve. Those who thrive here are willing to be kind to each other, listen, give feedback and challenge what we do so we can do it better; they have a high emotional intelligence quotient. We are so very proud of our team! Human resources serves to put processes and policies in place that benefit both the organization and the employee. The focus is on coaching employees to be their best selves, all levels of employees. With transparent and honest communication about whatever your struggle may have been, we would have loved to be able to empower you and help you along in your career. The role of HR at Dress for Success has no direct reports; as a result, is incapable of doing anything punitive or providing any repercussions outside of coaching managers about employees who have violated policies, procedures and/or have shown behaviors that are a detriment too other employees or our women. We wish you the best in the next step in your career journey.

Pros

Meeting so many wonderful women (and men) dedicated to helping unemployed women find their own strengths, their style, their assets, their voice and their confidence. The volunteers who come are just exceptional human beings and the staff are talented, big-hearted and hard working women.

Cons

Employees are NOT empowered, Human Resource policies are at the whim of each affiliate, "full-time with benefits" does not mean much, World Wide DFS offers no greater pool to empower their own workers with healthcare, bereavement, life insurance or retirement plans. Hard to write and talk about empowerment all day when you see fellow workers struggle to make their own lives work and get called out for questioning bad leadership decisions. High turn over is the result. Fiefdoms are not what this organization should be about!

Pros

Dress for Success makes a positive difference in the lives of disadvantaged women. They do successfully empower women through their services as stated in their mission.

Cons

Employees are generally not afforded the same respect, opportunities for growth and empowerment that is given to clients. The challenge is senior management and their inability to create an organizational culture that is transparent, values driven, respectful, communicative and collaborative.
