Pros

The mission of Dress for Success is powerful and life-changing. The clients are extraordinary women, and many volunteers are deeply committed to supporting them. When the work aligns with the mission, it is both meaningful and energizing. The broader global organization offers a model of what Dress for Success can and should be.

Cons

The Cincinnati affiliate is struggling with a deeply concerning internal culture that has been deteriorating for several years, and it is now at a point where board-level intervention is urgently needed. Multiple employees across different roles and time periods have described experiencing or witnessing patterns of targeting, inconsistent discipline, and leadership behavior that does not align with the values of the organization. A recurring issue is the selective and punitive use of policy, particularly the weaponization of the Employee Handbook, which is often applied unevenly, enforced retroactively, or used as a mechanism to exert control rather than to guide or support employees. Several high-performing team members have been disciplined for actions previously approved or considered normal, while others closely aligned with leadership receive broad flexibility. This has contributed to a culture of confusion, intimidation, and unpredictability. Concerns around political or cultural bias have been raised privately by multiple individuals. Employees have reported feeling scrutinized or marginalized based on perceived personal beliefs that have no relevance to their duties or performance. This is extremely troubling within a nonprofit whose mission centers on empowerment, dignity, and inclusion. Employees have also been assigned tasks far outside their role or physical capacity, with reluctance from leadership to address legitimate health or safety concerns. These patterns not only erode trust, they create potential organizational risk. Turnover has been notably high, with several capable, mission-driven employees exiting within a short span of time. The common thread in these departures is not the work itself but the internal culture and leadership practices. Morale among remaining staff and volunteers is significantly affected. Advice to the Board: The issues at the Cincinnati affiliate cannot be resolved internally under the current leadership structure. They require immediate governance-level review. An independent cultural audit, third-party HR evaluation, and leadership assessment should be commissioned to understand the scope of the problem. Consistent, transparent, values-based leadership is essential, and currently lacking. Dress for Success is an organization with a beautiful mission, but that mission is being undermined from within at this location. Without decisive board action, the affiliate risks losing more strong team members and damaging its credibility in the community. With appropriate oversight and accountability, however, Cincinnati could return to the values that make Dress for Success truly transformative.
