Pros

People who work there are top notch. Good pay and benefits, mental health support, ongoing training.

Cons

Stressful job, high turn over rate due to that or employees moving on to become police officers, short staffed.

Pros

The pay and benefits felt competitive, and the union works hard to keep the employer accountable.

Cons

My honest opinion: Without the union checking up on the employer, more horrible things would take place. Shame on leadership for gossiping, bullying, and allowing those in positions of power to get away with anything. Staff who work hard and care about the work they do end up suffering. The history, racism and other problems with policing are not acknowledged or trained despite dispatch playing such a large role in how police choose to respond. Systems of power and abuse are perpetuated in a culture of white supremacy. Despite what they might try to tell you, this is not a safe place if you are: female, gender expansive, a person of colour, neurodivergent or anybody else outside of the criteria of "white male". And nobody in a position of power will admit that. The work conditions are unrealistic and leadership will try to squeeze as much out of you as possible before you burn out. Take a look at the ever-growing list of stress leaves and resignations. It's truly shocking that this hasn't lead to meaningful change.

We are disappointed to read this feedback, as creating a respectful, inclusive, and supportive workplace is a priority for us and something we continue to invest in thoughtfully and deliberately. Our workforce is made up of a diverse team, with approximately 60% female employees, and we are proud of the multicultural environment we have built and continue to strengthen. We recognize that inclusion requires ongoing action, which is why we have introduced a number of initiatives designed to better support our people at different stages of life and work. These include increased mental health benefits, cultural leave for Indigenous employees, parental leave top-up, and partnering with organizations to provide support for employees returning from maternity leave and navigating menopause, to name just a few. In addition, all leaders across the organization have completed Respect in the Workplace training, and we maintain a zero-tolerance approach to bullying, discrimination, or any behaviour that does not align with our values. Concerns raised by employees are taken seriously and reviewed through established processes. While we acknowledge that individual experiences can differ, the concerns described here do not reflect the culture we are actively working to build and uphold. We would welcome the opportunity to better understand the issues you have raised; if you would like to discuss your experience further, please contact our People & Culture team directly.
