Pros

As employee there are no pros. Just you are gainfully employed.

Cons

NO training, no growth. Turnover high. HR Dept. is inept on so many levels. They post the same job every 6 months. It's who's on first when it comes to HR operations. HR Staff have no skills and are not qualified for there jobs. All patronage. Messaging is all wrong to the public, modern technology is not used, but they seem to want to promote innovative New York when the state gov is not innovative.

Pros

The organization offers very few advantages. However, if you are willing to put in 30 years of your life, you will receive a pension and healthcare benefits.

Cons

I would not recommend working for this organization unless you are a political appointee or are extremely desperate. There is no opportunity for advancement and pay raises are only given out once every 6 years. They do provide a pension but as you get closer to retirement age they try to force you out so that the pension benefit will not be as great. Moreover, employees are treated like slaves on a plantation. On the other hand, political appointees, who are buddies with the governor, get paid big salaries to do nothing all day. A year ago they hired a new CFO who had no background in finance and got paid $173,000 to spend her day networking for her next job which she finally found.

It's like my boss wanted me to quit

Pros

Good location - midtown manhattan, good work-life balance, some very nice people. A lot of potential if they can get rid of the toxic people at the top.

Cons

Poor leadership and non-existing organization. Projects don't get done unless there is a five-alarm fire to get it done. And then, everyone scrambles last minute to put everything together. Seriously low morale and super high turnover. My boss was painfully unorganized, unqualified, juvenile, rude and not collaborative or inspiring in any way imaginable. Even with a new team hired to help, she was so unbelievably difficult to work with, we all ended up leaving. None of the so called 'executives' in my dept. ever made any 'executive' decisions from fear that they would look bad. But instead, would routinely throw you under the bus in important meetings and act like everything was your fault. A classic case of the 'old way' of doing things which is why this place is so bad. A dysfunctional blend of antiquated management style and a sloppy, desperate need to please Albany.
