Good place to get experience, but don't look for recognition or formal career advancement opportunities. - Anonymous employee Africare Employee Review

Pros

You get a lot of experience and it's easy to pursue areas that interest you. You are not stuck in a "box" if you don't want to. In addition, field staff are dedicated and amazing to work with. Health insurance for HQ employees is 100% paid.

Cons

Management does not recognize or appreciate staff. There are not many opportunities for advancement in the organization. Systems are generally weak. There are sometimes dubious recruitment practices and you sometimes wonder how some staff members got their jobs with such limited capacity.

Pros

Africare employees are passionate about the work, and they are committed to the organization's mission.

Cons

There are many issues at Africare. 1) The organization has no direction. Africare adopted an "anything goes" approach to business. There's no BD strategy except "get any money you can find." 2) Africare, much like its senior leadership team, is having an identity crisis. Africare will change its competencies to suit the checkbook of its donors, even if they have no real experience in that sector. 3) The organization is fighting to stay relevant in an innovative landscape, but somehow refuses to invest in innovative concepts, employees or partners. 4) Africare boasts that "95 percent" of its staff is African, but there are no Africans in leadership positions at headquarters. 6) The senior leadership team is like the unpopular group of kids from HS who are now adults and are very determined to shed those personas. They are reckless leaders, completely oblivious to how low morale is, and worst of all, they are willing to demoralize their employees to make a point. As a result, the employee attrition rate has skyrocketed. 7) Hard work will not advance you at Africare. If senior leadership likes you enough, they'll make a new position for you. If not, be ready for your termination of employment.
