Pros
There were some exceptions to the rule
Cons
Years ago, I took a job with the airline. After several years of steadily moving up the ladder, I had the opportunity of working directly with one of the senior leaders. The role came about because one of the favorite employees of this senior leader was fired because they was caught doing something in a severe violation of the companies HR policies. I took the job (as an internal candidate). The senior leader never trusted me, never supported the fact that I had years experience doing the job from when I worked at a well respected strategy consulting company. I learned that they continued to contact the fired employee to check on my direction. When an annual 360 anonymous survey was given, I answered truthfully. I believed that the stellar performance I'd had in the role in a single year would be rewarded. I drove significant revenues for the company. I mentioned that this senior leader had little to no experience in the area in which we worked and I gave clear examples - both of how they were making irrational decision and how they continued to rely on the advice of a discredited employee. Remember, this was supposed to be an anonymous survey and the it clearly stated that the only people with access were HR. Well as it turned out the survey wasn't as anonymous as it was advertised and this information went straight to the senior leader for whom I worked. They decided to put someone else in the role - a person who was also later found to have been violating the same HR policies as the prior individual in my role. The company has had a culture of promoting individuals within the company whom were seen as favorites rather than those who create value.
