Pros

-Good Insurance -If you know your job well, you will have no issue with performing the work. -If you fall into a clique your enjoyment of the atmosphere is a definite. -Since a good majority of the people working there are clinically obese, the county insurance pays for gastric bypass. While I was employed, 911 had almost 15 dispatchers who had had the procedure done. I know more people had it done since I left.

Cons

This department is like any other Gov. Position. Who you know is a determining factor of your success. This position is a union position, so there are no chances of wage increase based on performance only across the board cost of living wage. You will be mandated constantly and will see few weekends or holidays as those time off requests are completed through seniority shift picks. Everyone in the center with you will know your personal life as management does nothing to stop harassment, and will divulge your personal medical info to others and the union representatives will discuss any talks or reprimanding with anyone who will listen. The center is like a big Kindergarten Class. Very few Upper management personnel have more than a GED, which seems to play into why management as well as the company have so many suits in litigation presently. The place is a pig stye. The bathroom were constantly filthy, the kitchen was a disgusting cesspool of rotten food in the refrigerator, and microwaves that never were clean. Vommitt laid on the steps of the inside stairwells for over a week before it was finally cleaned up... Oh yeah.... The bedbugs... Can't forget about the bedbugs...

Pros

Benefits and 18 paid holidays

Cons

The county did not want to do the work to create positive or much needed standards. The bar is set low with building standards, upper management does not have finger on pulse. Upper management also does not want to support their subordinates to make the changes needed at the team level to weed out the non-performers. I was told Allegheny County was not ready for me yet. Would taxpayers want to know that a manager was trying to get her employees to do 8 hours of work, to raise the standards and create positive change-- but was not allowed.
